thrihyrne: (Boromir life is good)
So it wasn't my birthday, but [livejournal.com profile] evannichols's 51st on Saturday. There was very yummy breakfast-eating at Slappy Cakes, kilt wearing (him, not me), a wander around the beautiful campus of his alma mater, Lewis & Clark College, and then being taken out to birthday sushi by [personal profile] sanguinity and [personal profile] grrlpup. And that was just Saturday!! I worked my usual shifts of 1-10 on Sunday and yesterday, but Evan was around much of yesterday so I could enjoy his company. And then my friend Jen stopped by during my break yesterday on her return trip to Eugene, so that was an additional highlight. Just a really wonderful, delight-filled set of days.

So here's a link to the photos, for those who don't follow me on other social media!

I'll be picking up my copy of Unfinished Tales this week and hope to get kick-started on some writing while on my business trip next week. :)

I'll link to the Raverly page which has more pics and my general dissatisfaction with how it fits in the back, but also from my upper chest upwards. But the sleeves and the yarn are gorgeous!

It's been a challenging couple of weeks. Work continues to be a variety of things, including disheartening and perhaps a short-term environment for me after all. More details in a day or so in a non-public environment, just in case.

But! In very exciting news! Under the cut is a new and up-to-date photo of yours truly with my new haircut and haircolor, for however long it lasts. Will be fun for Steamcon. Speaking of that, I'm actually sewing again, for the first time since 1988 on a sewing machine other than my own.
see here! )

I don't know if anyone else on my flist has made anything from a Folkwear pattern. My assembly is further along than in the picture; I can almost try them on. I'll be sporting them at Steamcon, though I'm not sure with what.

If you'd like to see the other pictures in the set that [livejournal.com profile] evannichols took during a mini photo shoot from the 17th, they are here.

I hope you all are well! Sorry so quiet on my end. Sorting through things.

I've been working on a couple of knitting projects, and hadn't really posted about them or shown photos. I did borrow [livejournal.com profile] evannichols's camera and finally took some pictures, now below the cut:

I may or may not have mentioned this, but the Official Mascot for Airbnb is… the mustache. So when Evan received a tentacle mustache as a gift, I knew there would be a photo op. So here we are in the new (to me) vintage dress I bought when [livejournal.com profile] emansil_12 was here visiting, and Evan in his steampunk garb. Then me with the mustache. Because, well— tentacle mustache!!

So Jen came down on Saturday from Vancouver, WA— this is my dear friend that I stayed with in Eugene my first days back in Oregon. She's just relocated across the river from Portland, so we'll get to see each other on a much more regular basis- and using the bus systems, it costs $4.55 one way. Not bad! :D We did a lot of lounging, much conversation, and I fed her this time after all of the cooking she did for me while I was with her. There was also Scattergories in front of the fire, some quality time spent at Bipartisan Cafe, the closest laid back cafe near me (and where I spent much time doing internet stuff with their free wifi when I first returned), a viewing of "Secret of Kells" on my computer, and she also joined me for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral's service of Lessons and Carols Sunday night. That's the choir I sang in in '09 but I haven't rejoined. Yet. I would wait until after the Advent/Christmas season anyway, but if I do get offered this job in Tigard (and if they pay enough to make the commute worth it), I won't be able to because there's no way on the bus that I can get from there to downtown by 7:30 on a weekday. :( But it was great to go to the service, one that I've been singing since my freshman year of college which is (gulp) 23 years ago. Yeah. My 20th reunion is next fall sometime, and I think I may go. But I digress…

Jen headed home on Monday after lunch and I did my usual stuff for the rest of the day. Today I combined a prescription refill and heading out for another modeling session on one bus ticket and gave myself plenty of time— if the frequent service bus had actually shown up. I ended up 20 minutes late for the art class but thankfully was able to get in touch with the coordinator who gave the professor a heads up. I have one final person to talk with at the Tigard job tomorrow morning at 8:30, which quite unfortunately means catching a bus at 6:30 a.m. to get there in time. YUCK. At least I've been given some bus tickets thanks to participating in this work thing associated with my food stamps. That's a major help.

So here's Jen and me, with Babs looking on with... approval, I suppose. :P )

I've been writing some about this potential new career to do with getting involved with the aging/retirement community, the upcoming approach of the large Baby Boomer generation in this, and my personal desires and drives to be doing something fulfilling and that is an intuitive use of my skills. Yesterday I had an information-gathering meeting with the Residential Life Director at one of the retirement centers here in town (I'd written to one, then called and left a message because the person was out of town for a week, but I've heard nothing). I wasn't sure how the meeting would go, but it was an absolute delight and I came away feeling all the more certain that I'm on the right track. She has the kind of position that I think I would be exceptional in, in that she's a liaison, listening ear, concierge and conduit between the independent residents and the management of the institution. I was asking pretty specific questions about computer use and support for residents and she helpfully filled in the picture for me. The kind of hybrid position of training with working with the aging community and low-grade IT support doesn't really exist, and it might be too narrow of a concept. She did indicate that it would be a very welcome volunteer position that I could create, were I to be staying in the area. I think that once I've relocated I'll do this same kind of information-gathering at as many facilities as I can get into, though it definitely helped here in that mom knew someone who is in an independent living apartment there and she greased the wheels by providing this person's email to me. Still, if I can reinforce again and again that I'm not looking for employment, I'm information gathering (as well as hoping to volunteer) I should be able to continue finding out more and more about what the various environments and cultures are like, as well as upcoming needs and how these institutions are planning for the influx of people who are far more tech savvy than they have been in recent years. What was most wonderful was being able to really talk with someone about respecting this group of people who in many ways are shunted off by society.

I then was picked up by this women my mom knew and I went to her apartment where we talked, got to know each other, and I started the process of helping her to make a clone of her hard drive so that she has a back up before also potentially helping her to upgrade her operating system. Like me, she's a long time Mac user, and a very savvy, living-life-to-the-fullest woman. I think I may end up disappointing her when I let her know that I'm going to be heading out to the northwest! But I'll help out as long as I can.

Don't know that I've mentioned this, but we have another house guest, a former colleage of my mother's who's spent time here before more than once. He's on sabbatical from his university in NJ and will be here for the semester, staying in the room across the hall from my parents. So it's a full house! He's quite laid back, a perfect house guest, and I know my mom is enjoying having him help out in her lab.

The post wouldn't be complete without yet another picture of yet another knitted project- I don't have buttons for the Mystery 80's Cardigan™ so I haven't taken pictures yet, but there was enough yarn left over for me to make a scarf, which I've given to my mom.

I don't think I've posted this many pictures since my trip to England last summer! But both of my cardigans are completely finished now, with buttons and everything, so I thought I'd post pictures. I think I mentioned that I'm working on this Mystery 1980s Cardigan™ that my grandmother was working on a few years ago and frankly, neither she nor anyone else knows who it was going to be for, so now I'll get to wear it. It's just plain stockinette, but the yarn variegation is pretty enough. But after that, I'll be completely without a new knitting project! This is Not Good, even though there's heaps on my plate. I have A Game of Thrones to listen to now! But no money. Still, I think I will do some research into a fitted cardigan in black, a nice soft black wool yarn, with some kind of pattern in it, even though I'll probably go blind. LOL.

I finished the knitted sugar-glider and gave it to my stepsister's daughter Dahlen on Sunday. Here are 3 pics of the finished item, by itself and with me and the recipient.

I'll need to take a couple of new pictures of my spring openwork sweater project, the one I started back in [cough] 2004 and had about 3/4 done and then totally dismantled and started over. I've completed the front and back and am now working on the sleeves. I've been spending some time at my account at Ravelry, updating pictures and projects and finding hundreds of free patterns (since I'm already on the lookout for my next project!) and decided to post 3 pictures taken about 90 minutes ago today. I knitted this vest in January and have only worn it a couple of times- I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Today was really blustery, hence my wonky hair. The pattern is Talia and so much fun to knit.

This is a gift for all of the Ron/Draco people on my flist: I'd mentioned over in [livejournal.com profile] sexyscholar's LJ that I'd found a gorgeous picture that looked like Ron/Draco to me. At long last, I've scanned said picture and will soon be making an icon out of it. In the meantime, here's the picture! It's from a manga called "Lies and Kisses" by Masara Minase. In the manga itself, they don't have red and blond hair, but in this one beautiful picture inside the front cover, they seem to be.

So here 'tis!
