thrihyrne: Portland, OR (I ship R/D by me)
I'm participating in a new R/D challenge this year, and they've made banners to pimp the upcoming voting! There are three categories and in order to vote, you must vote for each story in the category you've selected for your vote to count and to ensure there's no favoritism. However, please don't be intimidated: this is my OTP, Ron/Draco, not Harry/Draco where there would be dozens of stories. Would that there were, though! :P

There are a couple of other folks on my flist also participating in this, and I'm just so excited that there will be at least a few new R/D stories. I'm thrilled that I got to beta a couple, too, and I'll be excited to see readers' comments about them.

So in my current active writing notebook, starting at the front is my [livejournal.com profile] weasley_fest fic. I don't want it to be long, I really don't. But I think if the two characters in question simply get together, it's not as interesting as it could be. So still a ways to go with it. Starting at the back of the notebook was my most recent Slave Breakers story, and then the genfic Gimli story. I've decided that the Beornings must have taken a toll in silver or some other useful metal. I had to rewrite a whole section when I realized the Carrock wasn't directly above the Ford of Carrock, as in, not leading directly to it. While initially jazzed with this story, now I'm wondering why I picked this particular moment of Gimli and Glóin's journey to Rivendell. Am leaving it alone for inspiration to come along. In the middle of the notebook I've started another Slave Breakers story; that's the one that I've been envisioning in my mind's eye for a few days and is quite contentedly and at great speed writing itself. PWP with characterization exploration in that realm is just so much fun. Plus the visual in my mind's eye of Andrei/Lee/Bran was simply too exquisite not to write. Hee.

There were the M+M edits yesterday, thanks to Oshun's and my talk on Friday. And I'm about to go through withdrawal as I'm down to the final of the three Lord John novellas, the last book on tape to do with him that my library has. In looking at Ms. Gabaldon's Lord John series, I'm thrilled to see there's another one forthcoming; damn, is she prolific. I would jump at writing Lord John fanfic, but they're nearly all mysteries of sorts and/or to do with military life and that's not my strong suit. Not only that, but for it to be canonical, it would take quite a while for him to get together with anyone, England in the mid-1700s not exactly being queer friendly. The everyday vocabulary of a lord in that time period, especially to do with clothes, transportation and genteel conversation would also be a bit of a trial, at least at first. I've noticed some of it slipping into my current fics, but not specific words like swive, weskit or sodomitical society. :P

Mulling around in my head is what to write for Ardor in August. I checked out both Morgoth's Ring and The Children of Húrin to glean further first age knowledge. The concept and characters are coming to me for this particular story, but I haven't started writing. I'd really like to at least finish this Slave Breakers threesome (which is, surprisingly, turning into an illuminating look into Bran's thoughts on life post-freedom) and the Gimlific so I can focus on weasley_fest. Oh, and incorporate Oshun's edits. She's going to break me of my encourage me to use semicolons with less frequency. I knew I lean on them a lot. Soon I'll know just how much!

Hope you all have had a pleasing weekend!
thrihyrne: (K is for Kristi)
After sleeping in (because I couldn't sleep last night and ended up re-watching BSG "Razor" at around 1:30 a.m.), I made coffee, got cleaned up (because I'd gone to the gym last night and did the hot tub/sauna/steam room trio and was all sweated out), and packed my workout stuff in anticipation of going to free yoga followed by an actual workout at the gym. No free yoga! :( The class was trumped by a workshop. So I walked in the chilly rain to a nearby consignment store hoping to find some pants. My figure just isn't well-suited for the shape of pants in their current trends, and/or I'm inbetween conventional sizes. I tried on 8 pair in two different sizes and none of them worked. So off to the gym I went: this is my trial membership gym number three since January, this one an under-5-minute walk from the house. It's also the most expensive. *sigh* Their pool is great in that it's salt water, not chlorinated. I managed to find my goggles from my lap swimming days, and asked the gent at the counter how many laps a mile would be. Thirty-six. So that's what I did. After the gym time, I got my car filled up so I wouldn't be worried going to church tomorrow morning, and went to the grocery store. Wheeeeeee. Made another scrumptious spinach salad with a perfectly ripe avocado, black olives, blue cheese crumbles, almonds, craisins, carrots and blue cheese dressing. Yum!! The rest of today will (WILL) be spent writing up this Ron/Draco which is eating my brain. I feel badly for poor Ron; once again I'm torturing a character I love. And how did it get to be almost 9,000 words already, and I'm probably at about the halfway point? Speaking of R/D, the comm that I'm writing this for, [livejournal.com profile] rd_challenge, has re-opened signups for a few days. I know there are several R/D people on my flist, and while many of you have moved on to more active pairings and fandoms, if you wanted a nudge to write a bit more R/D, feel free!

A last bit 'o pimpage before I disappear into a very non-Magic Immunity R/D story, there are still three days (and some, depending on where you live) until April, which means there are a few days to come up with a contribution for the Marvellous Month of March over at Remus/Ron slash.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Love me do for snottygrrl)
I don't know how this has happened, but it's already Wednesday and thanks to the changes in my increased responsibilities at work and the fact that we're now in training, for the first time since I started working at the Opera here, I've been bringing work home in my psyche. This morning I found myself looking in the mirror and saying, "Shut up!" because I was making a to-do list of things to bring up with my supervisors when I get into work. But these hours here this morning before I go in, they're mine, my precious hours to type up fic and get a wee package sent off to a friend, check email, etc.

A couple of squee-worthy things for today and this week:
A lovely St. Patrick's day card from [livejournal.com profile] eldritchobbit
A thoughtful postcard from [livejournal.com profile] niennaainur (which is now on my cubicle wall at work!)
An invitation to join a Faramir-centric archive thanks to posting that one wee Faramir/Boromir story to the Of Elves and Men yahoo group. I do remain a bit baffled that that one is far more popular than the Aragorn/Halbarad, but it's also a lot shorter, less angsty, and F/B has a built-in following. Whatever. It's flattering!
I wrote my contribution for the [livejournal.com profile] raythoo songfic challenge last night. It's on the short side, but given the content, you wouldn't want it to be any longer. It's really, really dark and I like the imagery in it. I do remain a bit confounded (in a good way) as to how fertile and cross-pollinating my enthusiasm for the new Battlestar Galactica has been with my other fandoms. I have no desire to write BSG fanfic, but the music from the series and some of the plots and themes are definitely seeping creatively into my other works.
Some new and/or re-discovered words! In doing canon research for the Wraeththu story as well as some other reading, I have new words to add to my vocabulary in addition to the ones I get every day via Wordsmith.org. And the words are: pulchritudinous, lich, revenant, quodlibet, moue, peripatetic and pith. Words are great.

Back to it! Happy 'hump day' to one and all.

thrihyrne: Portland, OR (slave to the muse)
Yes, I'm a lemming. Gacked from at least [livejournal.com profile] heartofoshun and [livejournal.com profile] elfscribe5, I went through my harddrive and discovered waaaaaaay more works in progress (or simply abandoned fics, in some cases) than I thought I had! So here they are, listed in alpha order by the titles they have. So, the meme:

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence unless you're a cheater like me and posted occasionally a dialogue line.

That said, if anyone is curious about particular sentences, I'll dish!

    1) Colin's words held no bite; truth be told, he'd much prefer his lover to be mellow that way than via the gallons of bourbon he'd drunk in recent years.

    2) When Remus came to, before even opening his eyes, he took stock of his appendages.

    3) Gathering wine, salted meat, chalices, and her good graces, she awaited her Lord of the Hoarfrost Eyes.

    4) While Fred and George spoke to each other in their unique twinspeak, Arthur surrendered to the sleep that had been wanting to claim him for many hours, his arm draped protectively over Molly and his two youngest children.

    5) "This is unthinkable, immature and ill-advised," Severus seethed, though he did dim his wand to the faintest glow.

    6) “For love of brother, uncle and leige, I lied, I feigned manhood, and I deserted my kingdom,” she said harshly. “Who kept you caged?”

    7) Monarch swooped on him, all long arms and chartreuse cape and far-too-tempting lips as he planted a dry row of kisses from Balthamos' cheekbone to his jaw.

    8) Éowyn thought that she would rather serve a fifteen-course dinner to Gríma Wormtongue than endure listening to her own genealogy, so she cut him off.

    9) "Frightfully Bad Idea!!" glowed in red letters on the watch face, but he ignored it.

    10) Perhaps it was because he was a son of Fëanor and had been born with an obsession for beauty and no small amount of pride, but Amras often liked to think of how they must look together, his ruddy tones and fiery hair mingling with that of his more luminous partner.

    11) It wasn't in so many words, but Severus had revealed that his deepest longings were for Remus, and a life in which he could tell people who wished to make him act against his will to fuck off and leave him alone.

    12) Bruises were everywhere, rope burns, and most horrifying of all, a tyre track across a shattered shinbone.

    13) It was like pushing millions of square pegs into the round holes of her façade.

    14) Anardil was imposingly painted, his pale hair blowing in the wind, his hand clasped to the mast of his beloved Eämbar, blue eyes glacier-cold in their foresight.

    15) To her, however, it was as though the world had been shattered, then spelled back together with a tragically inept Reparo, the cracks and omissions glaring and unfathomable.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (love knits)
I do feel better about myself when I'm accomplishing activities, especially creative ones. Today I've done some domestic things (laundry, washing dishes, eating breakfast) and some fandom things (reading and commenting, beta'ing, working on plots). I've been mentioning this knitting project for my younger brother and his wife, who are expecting their first child in May. It's a Dale of Norway pattern, and colorwork. I really despise colorwork. You may well wonder why on earth I picked this as a project. Well, 8 years ago when I was between projects, I thought I'd make a Dale of Norway sweater for my then-spouse, but thought it would be smart to make an infant size one first, and I was bound to have somebody I could give it to. Yeah. Well, the project languished, the marriage came to an end without him getting said sweater (then again, in Nashville, it would have been too hot for one!). I've resurrected this project and have two in-process pics, as well as one of the page of the baby versions in their completed forms from the knitting book. Just so you all have an idea of what I'm talking about. The sweater itself is knit in the round on size 2 needles.

So! For the rest of today: Writing on my new Wraeththu story, knitting, then work. After work? Probably more writing or knitting. That'll be the theme for the weekend, though I'm planning to go for a walk with [livejournal.com profile] evannichols at some point, as well as get up and go to the Episcopal Cathedral again Sunday morning. After the service I hope that I can chat with the choir director in person and maybe even get an impromptu audition if he wants one so I can hopefully join their choir.

Much love to you all! I'll be around and keeping up, I do hope.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Bagoas the Persian Boy by mrbnatural)
I know; I should be going to bed. I've been typing in the beginnings of this new Wraeththu story which is breaking my heart (though, as in Vaysh/Ashmael's story, it's Storm who first came up with the terrible things that happen to the characters canonically, I'm just elaborating on it!), and decided to revisit a Russian fan site entitled "Bagoas in Love," which has a lot of pictures of Francisco Bosch, as himself or as Bagoas and even some Egyptian-topic'ed movie in which much of his head is shaved. I studied Russian for several years but I can't read most of what's said. Anyway, I found a gorgeous picture of Francisco-as-Bagoas (also known for posing as Panthera in the Wraeththu picture book, and he'd signed the copy I bought from Immanion Press!!) at the site and felt like sharing. I love the juxtaposition of his muscular thighs and calves which contrast with his demure pose and painted toenails... and the ring on his long second toe about undid me. I'm going to have to incorporate that somehow in this Wraeththu fic I'm working on, though neither Aleeme nor Azriel are anywhere functioning enough to care about how beautiful their feet look.

The pic is here, under the cut )

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. ♥ I'm ashamed to admit that I've eaten an entire 15 oz jar of Tostitos salsa con queso over 48 hours.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Kodamas!)
I got a very thoughtful beta and some guidance from [livejournal.com profile] elfscribe5 today on my slashy santa fic; it's become longer than I'd expected, but I feel much more confident about it now as I write the last scene. It did occur to me while we were IM'ing that I've pretty much written nothing but fest-oriented fics since this summer; nothing has come along and grabbed me, shaken me and said, "Write me NOW" as some stories have done. I guess I miss that. That said, it came to me, a story idea, and one that had appraoched me some time ago and then lurked away quietly. It'd be Wraeththu, a post-series story for once, about Aleeme and Azriel and how they cope (or don't) and recover (or don't) after their experience with Ponclast. It'd be high on the angst-o-meter by default, but I think it could be cathartic for me, and I'm pretty sure there aren't a lot of those fics already written. I'll need to check Forever Wraeththu to make sure.

More on the incessant job hunt )

New Year's Eve is tomorrow, too; it's not a holiday that I particularly care about one way or another, but I do have plans to join my future housemate, Julia, and some other friends for at least part of the evening. Apparently Julia is also a Scrabble shark, so that could be fun. :) Since I'll have the next day off, I'll probably want to stay up and write, which I can do since I can sleep in. Is New Year's a big day for any of you? If you do go out, please be careful.

Lastly, I'd like to thank the many people who have sent me holiday cards, and also thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhobbit, [livejournal.com profile] evannichols, [livejournal.com profile] kymyrra and [livejournal.com profile] persephone100 for their thoughtful gifts. I really will send out the postcards I designed, once I know when I'll actually be moving. It may be February, or some point in January. I just don't know yet, which is sort of unsettling, but in other ways, it's okay. When the time comes, I have a place to go.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (yours truly)
For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope that you're enjoying yourselves in whatever manner makes you the happiest. Oftentimes this involves family, which can quite frequently bring stres and other unpleasantness, so I hope that any of you who may be facing such are doing okay. Many folks on my flist aren't Americans, so happy Thursday to you all.

It was thanks to a key friend a few years ago that got me thinking about First Nation people, and that for them, this holiday really isn't something to celebrate. I believe that I have all of 1/32 Cherokee, but thanks to my friend A., I'm much more aware that for many people in this country, this is a time of remembrance and, quite possibly, anger.

Today is the second time this week (beginning with Sunday) that I've gone jogging! There's a track at the nearby Reed College (who should have hired me back in September, but I'm mostly over my bitterness, lol) and I'm consciously trying to get much more regular aerobic exercise. It has some longish slopes so it's not totally flat, and the area is pretty with views of the city across the river. I jogged three laps on Sunday; today I went the other direction on the track (something suggested to me by a runner friend years ago) and jogged four laps. I feel quite good about it! I don't do New Year's resolutions, but now is the perfect time for me to resolve to get back into better shape.

I've spoken with both my dad/stepmom and mom/stepdad, briefly with [livejournal.com profile] koshweasley though I'd called [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins' cell phone, and am settling in to type up some of my yuletide fic and maybe watch part of a movie. I'm going over to [livejournal.com profile] sanguinity and [livejournal.com profile] grrlpup's house where [livejournal.com profile] leboyfriend and [livejournal.com profile] evannichols will also be part of the festivities. Should be a lot of fun with (hopefully!) much irreverent conversation and laughter. I'm taking my knitting as well; [livejournal.com profile] sanguinity is also a knitter and I suspect she won't at all mind me bringing a project with me. :D This kind of laid back holiday is perfect for me. Tomorrow I'll be participating in Buy Nothing Day, though I really wish I had some dress pins to hold these knitted baby booties together before I crochet them together. I can wait until Saturday, though.

You know what I'm most grateful for right now? That you all are in my life. Thank you!!
thrihyrne: (plaidtastic)
I'll not use my fun double dagger symbol, but:
~ I actually secured some donations tonight, so, yay! Not even for the possible commission for me (they weren't major gifts by any means), but I spoke with lovely people and it helps an art form I believe in, opera.
~ One of my colleagues said I was a ray of sunshine. And she was being serious.
~ I went to a health food-ish chain grocery store to look for a gluten-free pie crust (not exactly for me; I love wheat and pasta and all of that) and ran into the homeowner of the house where I live. It was fun to see him in a different context, and totally out of the blue.
~ I'm getting a massage tomorrow morning!!
~ My Ron/Remus story was posted today, here at the [livejournal.com profile] remus_ron_slash fest. It's locked as it's NC-17, and is on the longer side for this fest (a bit over 10K), so if you'd care to read a recently-written HP story from me, there 'tis. It needs some love. Or maybe just a comment or two. ;)
~ I'm going to go to at least one yarn store tomorrow, and take [livejournal.com profile] evannichols along with me.
~ I'm able to listen to EdgeRadio again! [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins's station rocks.
~ I'm making progress on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic. I'm not supposed to discuss any details about it publicly, but I think I'll feel quite accomplished and proud of it when finished.
~ I wrote [livejournal.com profile] cim_halfling a letter this morning. :)
~ To work tonight I wore a cool vest designed by Jade Starmore that I knitted several years ago, and felt pretty stoked about the number of interesting garments and gifts I've knitted over the years. Mine was knitted in a purple heathered yarn, not the goldenrod this person did, but it shows the pattern really well.
~ I think I'll now go and sign up for [livejournal.com profile] slashy_santa. Because I don't have enough on my plate. ;)
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Boromir life is good by fifmeister)
Just a fast drive-by post before going off to an appointment and then another day of calling for donations at the Opera...

My weekend at the Oregon coast was splendid. )

I think that's about it for now; I've been getting back in the habit of writing cards and letters and that feels good to reconnect with my correspondence self. I'm looking forward to having tomorrow morning to write on NaNo and my Wraeththu WIP as well as redo my roots. :P Well, I'm not really looking forward to that. I do have an appointment with a hairdresser who is an apprentice with Aveda and since she's an apprentice (to them, surely not to cutting and styling hair) the cost is $10. I saw a sign in the Fred Meyer closest to me and made an appointment at long last for a hair cut. Aveda products and a hair cut for $10? I'm all over it.

Oh! And I must pimp [livejournal.com profile] remus_ron_slash as they/we (I helped out a wee bit behind the scenes and I'm definitely a supporter and participant) begin posting Ron/Remus stories today. Ron/Remus seems to be one of those pairings that people really enjoy and always say, "I wish there was more of that!" Well, your wishes have come true, so if you do like that still-rarepair, go and read and if you enjoy, of course be sure to let the author know. I believe that stories and/or art will be posted on a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule with longer fics on Fridays so that they can be read and savored over the weekend.

I hope you all are doing well; I'll hope to post more comments to you all now that my life is in a far more stable place. In fact, I'm venturing into Pretty Wonderful territory, and that's a welcome change. ♥
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Kelp in new Wraeththu fic)
Well, I think this is probably the next to last post in this; my writing focus is a bit scattered these days between this, beginning the process of reworking "Maelstrom and Mage," revisiting a languishing HP story, beta'ing, and writing a little bit on NaNoWriMo. At any rate, for the few of you who might be reading along, here's more of Kelp and his clan while still with the tree-hara.

Summary: Níl gach uile fhánaí caillte— Not all who wander are lost. (J.R.R. Tolkien) Kelp, a newly-incepted har and his companion, Blackspur, journey from an outer island of Alba Sulh to find others of their kind. Adult. Adventures, aruna, and an occasional warning for violence. No warnings for this post in regards to content except for some angst.

Well, it's taken a while to get this next post done, but that's because I went to England and actually met Storm in person!!! ♥ So if anyone is still following along with this WIP, here's more Kelp and early Sulh. The concept of hara living in the trees is definitely inspired by my Tolkien background and the Elves of Lothlorien. The characters are all OCs with the exception of Cobweb, back in his early, early years as a har. This is a story set in the misty early years of the Sulh.

This one is a true cliffhanger; my apologies, but it was getting long. I'll have the next post soon since I know what's going to happen. I also have a proper summary. To the few of you reading along, thank you so much! These hara are really captivating my imagination, doubtless only to be exacerbated when I go back to Alba Sulh the U.K. next month. So! I've been working on an early-era Wraeththu story, Sulh-centric. I'm not entirely sure where I'll go with it, but The Muse has been giving me ideas. I'll try to post once a week; I don't think this will be as long as Maelstrom & Mage or DtWW, but I'll write on it until it seems to have come to a logical end.

Pairings: Vaysh/Ashmael (historic)

Novella summary: Being brought back from the dead doesn't mean happily ever after, especially if you're Vaysh. Life has its costs, and he pays dearly. An exploration of Vaysh's character in the years before and through Pellaz's transformation, and the burdens he endures, because he must.

Post summary: A very canon ending; what's done is done, and Vaysh confronts what he must: he is stronger than he realizes. A few quotes, again, from Enchantments, as to ignore them would seem stilted. Continued from post 9, here. Epilogue to follow shortly. My thanks to Storm Constantine for having captured my imagination with Wraeththu so much over the past few months, and having led me, thusly, to those of you reading this.

I'm now ready to write more Wraeththu PWP, or something set far afield from this. These two gapfillers have worn me out, though I still love Vaysh more than life itself. I don't say that this is at all healthy. ;)
