As part of my planned rest days/PTO after working the holidays, I've worked out at Mod Physique every day this week. This morning when the alarm went off, I realized I was dreaming I was in class! Funny. I also had a sauna/massage combo at Loyly, red velvet cupcakes have been purchased and eaten, and yesterday during a Portland group working day hosted by Airbnb, my colleague Bubut and I were completely unexpectedly sung to by our colleagues, and we each were presented with some kind of yummy looking pies with candles. All in all, pretty cool. :) There will be further celebrations tomorrow by going on a personal tour of the Hat Museum with [personal profile] grrlpup and [personal profile] sanguinity, and later on we'll celebrate another January birthday celebrant, [personal profile] snottygrrl. Very busy week and weekend, actually— much more frenetic than somehow I had initially imagined. [livejournal.com profile] evannichols has Dude Night tonight, and I in turn am going to attend my first ever free clothing swap. So many activities!

I also took my pair of cowboy boots to Shoes on the Run downtown in order to fix a hole in the sole I hadn't realized was there until last month when my mom and stepdad were visiting and I wore them to Multnomah Falls. I normally don't go downtown (certainly not in a car and when I will have to park), but Tuesday became more complicated since Evan was trying to schedule in an appointment to see his chiropractor, and I had the car. Thanks to our handy neocortexes, I was able to go work out, drop off the boots, take the car to his work, have a quick visit with Evan, be walked to the nearest bus stop, and rode the bus home.

This weekend will mark the second of my two full sat/sun weekends, truly luxurious. I'll work Monday as it's a holiday (and I'm keenly interested in being paid double, thanks all the same) but then have Tues-Thurs off once more. This week is the anti-frenetic, not-so-focused-on-being-constantly-productive rest time. There will be movies and knitting, reading, and hopefully a lot of writing. Also moving my altar so that it's not on a shelf but can be open to space. It seems claustrophobic to me right now, so with the help of a couple of paper boxes and the acquisition of Kristi-selected fabric to cover them, my sacred space can be moved from under its overhang. It's all part of a very organic process that feels true to my path right now. I find I'm at last able to get out of my own way; I know I'm not struggling against the current of where to expend my energies. I'm cultivating gratitude and it's second nature. These are welcome felicitations. :)

So it wasn't my birthday, but [livejournal.com profile] evannichols's 51st on Saturday. There was very yummy breakfast-eating at Slappy Cakes, kilt wearing (him, not me), a wander around the beautiful campus of his alma mater, Lewis & Clark College, and then being taken out to birthday sushi by [personal profile] sanguinity and [personal profile] grrlpup. And that was just Saturday!! I worked my usual shifts of 1-10 on Sunday and yesterday, but Evan was around much of yesterday so I could enjoy his company. And then my friend Jen stopped by during my break yesterday on her return trip to Eugene, so that was an additional highlight. Just a really wonderful, delight-filled set of days.

So here's a link to the photos, for those who don't follow me on other social media!

I'll be picking up my copy of Unfinished Tales this week and hope to get kick-started on some writing while on my business trip next week. :)

- and it's a special birthday, indeed! A banner year: the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything! :D

Looking forward to birthday sushi this weekend, [personal profile] sanguinity! ♥

On Saturday, [personal profile] grrlpup and [personal profile] sanguinity joined [livejournal.com profile] evannichols and myself for roller skating!! It was great fun. It turns out that the Mt. Scott Community Center has a roller rink. Evan being a good sport (as, with a lingering back injury and recent back-throwing-out-incident, he does not skate), the four of us went and three of us skated. We came back to our place for pizza, red velvet cupcakes and ice cream, and the 25th anniversary edition of WarGames. Yes, the film in which I have my first remembered boycrush, Matthew Broderick. Sanguinity hadn't actually seen the film before, ever, which made the experience all the more entertaining. It was a great day that started out with phone calls to family while Evan was at the chiropractor. Yesterday featured much needed downtime, at least until my 1-10 shift.

My actual birthday is on Tuesday, and I was able to switch my days off so that I can enjoy the actual day and my gift from Evan, which is sauna and massage time at Loyly. Then we're going to an Airbnb listing that happens to be the partner of one of my fair colleagues, where we'll enjoy the hot tub and lounge for a while. Should be a great day! And since my now-usual Tuesday shift is, oddly enough, 12-9, I switched for Wednesday this week, so I'll get the morning off as well. I'm really looking forward to it.

I have several other fandom-centric friends with birthdays around mine, so similar Birch birthday wishes to [personal profile] snottygrrl, [livejournal.com profile] altariel and my actual birthday sharer, [livejournal.com profile] verdenia.

My dear [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhobbit: Tolkien brought us together, but writing and friendship and yes, social media, have made it possible and facilitated our staying together. It's difficult to put into words just how profoundly you impacted my life, how you supported me in my writing and fandom passions when they were a source of strife in my own home. Thank you for remaining a friend and confidante on our respective journeys. May those roads go ever on, and on…

This is a huge birthday month for me, and today is the pinnacle! There are four amazing people in my world who share today's birthday, three of whom are here on DW/LJ, and hopefully you'll stop by and see this message… eventually. :)

So to [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins, [livejournal.com profile] llembas and [livejournal.com profile] risiepookie, Happy, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Birthday!!

Today is my beloved [livejournal.com profile] evannichols's 50th birthday!! ♥ There has already been a celebratory breakfast (his usual waffles and chicken hot dogs, but with bonus unicorns) and we'll celebrate throughout the weekend. There will also be gluten free special order cake! And Skypeing with his family. So I won't be online all that much. There are celebrations and dinners out to be had! :D
thrihyrne: (Boromir life is good)
To my nearby neighbor, fellow writer, and someone I really would like to hang out with again— HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :D :D I must apologize for not getting a card to you in time, but you are in my thoughts and I hope you're having a marvelous weekend. Most festive felicitations to you on your natal day!
thrihyrne: (asian text)
Firstly, I am remiss in wishing [personal profile] jaiden_s a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY yesterday! Joyous felicitations to you, my fellow redhead and lover of such! :D

Ostara/the Vernal Equinox may have been two days ago, but this morning after my alarm went off and I had my now-daily 5:30 a.m. chat with [livejournal.com profile] evannichols (I'm trying to get more on his schedule- both simply to have a schedule and also to stay more in touch, especially on days when I don't go to meet him at BHFT for lunch) before glancing outside. There, in the dark, I saw… snow. Of course! :P My Grand Plans™ of running each morning have yet to manifest themselves, but I must admit that the weather hasn't been cooperating. Maybe next week.

and the ick )

And now, for some more coffee, though I'm going to take it easy. Yesterday I made a full pot of coffee… and drank it all. :P Not healthy!!

To my beloved friend and Lómelindi co-founder: Very, very celebratory wishes for you on this natal day in particular! I regret that we're on opposite sides of the country and that we haven't seen each other in person for years, but you're always in my heart. Thank you for cheering me on from the sidelines, as I do for you and your myriad successes.

So many wonderful folks in my life who have birthdays today! Yet another reason why I love this time of year: the onset of autumn, new beginnings, and these three amazing, dear friends all share their natal day today. Without further verbiage on my part, my happiest wishes to [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins, [livejournal.com profile] llembas and [livejournal.com profile] risiepookie. For Wolfie, after talking to Kosh, I wish for the universe to quit shitting on you and to send you a Floridian housing lender who is made of common sense and not brick. For Jen, I gift you a virtual countdown clock for your departure from the hellish temperatures of Dallas. For Risie, a gift of extra time in the day to enjoy with your relatively new love- and maybe to send me a very quick email every once in a while. ;) I miss you!!!
Cheers to you three! I'm so glad you're in my life and that I have the extraordinary joy of having spent time with all of you in real life. :D ♥

thrihyrne: (hand written letter writer)
Last Friday my parents and I watched "Mao's Last Dancer," an engaging film that tells the true life story of a boy selected from his rural Chinese village to go to Bejing and trained as a dancer. Of course there's more, as he comes to the U.S., and I won't mention more except to say that Chi Cao, the lead, is amazing. If you enjoy watching dancers, especially male ballet dancers, you'll love this. He's incredible. There's a great interview with him here. For whatever reason this has brought back memories of my own life, since until I was about 16½ I really believed that I'd grow up and be a 'ballerina.' I did dance 3-4 days a week until that age, but circumstances changed and I focused more on singing. Not that I would ever have been good enough to be a professional dancer, but I was decent.

After 9 months of lying dormant, I've picked up my original fic again. Some of you are on that filter, so if you see something you've not seen in ages, that's it! It's been long enough that before I continue on (I wrote about 6 pages and posted them, but am pausing), I'm re-reading the story and writing down attributes of the main characters on index cards, as well as the vocab I'd created for the khorite world they're in. My challenge is simply to tell the story without any kind of intended audience in mind. With my fanfic, I knew the audience. This is different, and of course there's a part of my mind thinking, "Hey! This is unique! It could go to press in one form or another someday…", but I'm trying to hush that voice down and just let the characters speak. Always a challenge.

Tonight I'm going for 3 hours of training so that I can co-lead a citizenship class as offered through the local literacy council where I was leading the informal conversation classes. While I've been thinking primarily of doing an Oxford course to be certified to teach English o'seas if I go that route, it's come to my attention that there is an ESL program here at JMU. I think their focus is on domestic teaching, but I think I would be doing myself a disservice not to check it out.

And, one day late, but a very Happy Birthday to my very dear [livejournal.com profile] cim_halfling. So glad I was able to sing to you and chat this weekend! ♥♥

Firstly, 2-day-belated natal day wishes to [livejournal.com profile] evannichols! I hope that you had a splendid day and that you thoroughly enjoy the holiday weekend.

To my kindred spirit and dear friend [livejournal.com profile] persephone100, I know you're not on LJ much at all these days, and I'll sing happy birthday to you on the phone tomorrow. I definitely plan on visiting you in person again this summer!!

so, about that super complicated and gorgeous cardigan )

the other stuff )

Oh, and Pema Chödrön's works continue to rock my world. I checked out When Things Fall Apart from the library and will be participating in a chapter discussion over at the WFS forum. Today I had this phrase come to me, after some soul-searching: The time to live fearlessly is NOW. I'm going to try and really take that to heart and nurture the fabulousness I do have that I've been covering up for some time.

… and I may just put out a request for writing prompts. It's been far, far too long.

Dear, dear friend, fellow alumna of my alma mater, she who found me via my Ron/Draco and whom I've had the privilege of meeting twice- once you'd moved to England: happy, happy birthday (one day late). Thank you for your years of friendship, your insightfulness, your sass, and for giving me great memories of our times together. You can count on more regular snail mail correspondence in the coming months.

Oh my dear! Happy felicitations and I'm sorry that I don't have an actual card to you on time. I remain forever grateful for your help with Maelstrom and Mage, and I am in constant admiration of your devotion to Tolkien fandom and study. Plus I got to meet you in person once! I'll need to remedy that "once", for sure.

May you be celebrated whole-heartedly. Thank you for your years of friendship! ♥
thrihyrne: (plaidtastic)
To a fellow redhead and someone who appreciates men in kilts as I do, happy happy birthday! I hope that this year is a great one for you, complete with good wine and fun travels. So glad to have gotten to know you over the past couple of years! ♥
thrihyrne: (plaidtastic)
Many happy returns of the day, my dear friend!! I know you don't enjoy celebrating your birthday, but if memory serves, you're having a great time in Florida and where better to be for your natal day. Have a great one!! ♥
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (January baby by skellog)
To all those who wished me birthday wishes, thank you so very much. I did have a very enjoyable day and now it's back to the regular world. :sigh: But I really do appreciate the fond wishes. ♥
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Boromir life is good by fifmeister)
It's so hard to believe that we've been friends for several years now. Were it not for you, I wouldn't have discovered fanfiction, and due to that and our co-creation of the Lómelindi, I have met dozens of wonderful friends. I remain forever grateful for the time back in the day when we could meet for coffee and you were so supportive of my initial writings. I have so much to be grateful for in regards to you and our friendship, and I hope you have an absolutely WONDERFUL day today. Let the celebrations begin!

Much love,

Thev
