thrihyrne: (hand written letter writer)
While I do have more minutes than I used to on my phone, I'm going to be changing next month and 'regressing' back to fewer, so I'm getting back into the habit of doing most calls on the weekend, which are free. That's my plan for today, having already spoken to one friend and plans to speak with another two before the day is out. I'm also scheduled to have a physical at the plasma center; since I went off of my meds earlier this year, my psychiatrist had to say I was okay to donate again and apparently I get to have the physical again as well. That's fine; I'm just ready to start having some spending money once more.

The week just got away from me: I attended one documentary film showing with my parents, attended two free Baroque concerts, had my first week with the literacy conversation class, did a lot of knitting, and went to a pure Pilates class yesterday for the first time in... a long time. I am hurting today, both my abs/core muscles and my shoulders/arms (we used a 4 pound medicine ball as part of the class). This feeling has been exacerbated by mowing the lawn this morning with our non-self-propelling mower, and then taking Taffy out for a long walk. The walk was mostly fine until we came across a dog that wasn't restrained in any way. They got along, but I was physically holding on to Taffy's harness, holding her, pulling her away as she jumped and pulled against me to get to the dog. Way too much physical activity involved in me at 120 pounds trying to get the 65 pound wiry dog to go where I want her to go. So I took some ibuprofin once we got home.

This afternoon I'm going to type in my first fic I've written in months and even have somebody signed up to beta it. Yay! And I wish that ink were free so I could print out my monk story from last year to re-read it all, see where I was, and decide where I want to go with it. Toward an ending would be nice. :P I wish that by watching Game of Thrones I would be inspired to my own high fantasy, but instead, I'm just enjoying watching it. I've put in a request for it as an audiobook via interlibrary loan so I can get the full effect of this huge story. Being a Tolkien buff, I'm hoping this series won't be too daunting in terms of geography, peoples and names.

The second sleeve on the cardigan is really coming along; may be done by next week. I have yet to start on the sugar-glider, but soon I won't have any other knitting projects, which is a very strange place to be. Yet another reason to have spending money! Although now that I think about it, I have another project that I last worked on during the England choir tour last summer, and I really should finish it…

Tomorrow morning I'll get to sing a lovely piece by Hildegard of Bingen with a soprano whose voice I simply adore. We really do sound like one voice as we sing the one line together, and I hope that it goes off as well as it sounds when we've been rehearsing. We'll both be more nervous than when we rehearse, but it is summer and there simply aren't that many people in the congregation. Still, it could be quite magical.

Today I sang at the 'Swan Song' concert for the organist and choirmaster of 22 years at the church where I sing. She's retiring and her final Sunday is tomorrow morning. The concert went very well; we sang music from our England tour back in July. It wasn't standing room only, but there was quite a respectable crowd there.

I also received my author copy of Paragenesis yesterday from [livejournal.com profile] wiebke. This is only the third time I've seen anything of mine in print, and this is the first fiction I've seen. And it's my name, my legal name, there on the page. Pretty cool! I think when autumn comes I'll be working with [livejournal.com profile] wiebke again to see if there's still a future for Maelstrom and Mage.

And now I'm treating myself to watching some of season one of True Blood and knitting. My skirt is about 3/4 done; it's really coming along.

The other not so fun element to today was coming home to discover that Taffy, our dog, had both vomited and shat herself in her crate while my stepdad and I were out at the concert. So we worked as quite the efficient team to get her crate and her cleaned up, as well as the room itself. The poor thing! I don't know what happened, if she ate something funky, I just don't know. I took her out for a walk mid-day and she seemed fine. :(

… I'm sick. AUGH! I had a day of feeling as though I was swallowing razor blades, and pretending as though everything was fine. By late/early in the morning two nights ago, one of my roommates graciously offered me up some decongestants since, in my fitful sleep, I sounded as though I was drowning. So now I've been getting joking (but very sympathetic) comments about me being the group's newest tenor, or that I'm all of a sudden a smoky-voiced woman. Thanks to Boots I now have a decongestant nasal spray and am feeling much better, though my voice is still for crap. Thankfully I'd not lost my singing voice for our concert yesterday, since in that concert I was in no fewer than three small groups— and my voice held through and had decent vocal quality. Today is a totally free day, which is very appreciated, not the least because we had to be up and on the bus by 7:30 a.m. yesterday. We're in York and there's plenty for me to do, not the least: Medieval Walls to walk on! Minster! Towers!

I can't resize my photos, and it seemed to be a lot of trouble to upload given the erratic strength (but constant, yay) internet access, so I'm going to wait and post pictures when I get back home.

I've been trying to keep up with you all, and hope that things are well for the most part. Must say that I'm so glad to be out of the country!! I so adore being overseas. ♥

My time in Ely was quite pleasant. It's a very small little place with a massive cathedral in the middle of it. I could easily transport myself back to a time in the middle ages when that would have been the major focus of the town. Our concert went well; no major bloopers and we had a decent sized audience. We sang in the Lady Chapel which was well lit and also meant that it got rather hot, as opposed to the rest of the cathedral which was quite cool. Especially for me, being as cold-natured as I am, I'm really not used to the sensation of sweat running down the back of my thighs. I should probably mention that we're singing in our cassocks and cottas on top of other clothes, hence making us even warmer.

Now we're in York, having had a mid-day several hours at Lincoln cathedral. While in the medieval town, I found a fabulous used book store and found a perfect gift for a friend. :) She won't get it until I return. Since I'm not spending that much time online, I'm going to disable comments, but I'm glad that any of you reading this are with me. I'll hope to download and resize a few pics and post them as well.

The bad element: I slept like crap last night and also woke up feeling as though I'd been swallowing razor blades. I've been trying to pretend all day that it wasn't happening and that I'll be all well instantly. Instead, I'm now congested, but will hopefully get a decent night's sleep, take some ibuprofin, and stay hydrated. We have a concert tomorrow morning at 10:30 at Durham, which means that we have to leave at 7:30 a.m. AUGH!

With all seriousness, anyone on my flist who lives in the U.K. who'd like to meet me, here are the dates and times for the services/concerts at which I'll be singing this coming week.

Thursday, June 24th: Lunchtime Concert in Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral - 1:10 p.m.
Saturday, June 26th: Concert in Durham Cathedral – 10:30 a.m.
Monday, June 28th: Evensong in York Minster - 5:15 p.m.
Tuesday, June 29th: Choral Eucharist in Bradford Cathedral - 7:00 p.m.

I'd love to meet you, so if you do come hear us (Trinity Church choir from Staunton, Virginia), please introduce yourself to me afterwards! I think you all know what I look like; I have an icon of me. I'm taking a laptop so I won't be all that AFK, but we will be kept pretty busy. Wish me well and that I don't freak out about flying. :P

Well, the movie first. I adore it. Absolutely superb, and I hope to be able to share a viewing of it with friends in the future. I also found the soundtrack so I can listen to it. I should make an icon, too… I teared up when Aisling was singing to the cat, and cried a wee bit at the end. Highly, highly recommended film.

So today has been pretty productive:
wrote a letter to my dad and stepmom
did research to ensure whether or not I could take my knitting needles on the trip to England (seems to be yes)
worked on my database consulting project for four hours
had brief but fun IM chat with Callum, who I'll get to see again when I'm in England
read part of a book
watched 2/3 of a House episode and knitted
went to a yoga challenge 75 minute class, then hung out in the sauna. Ahhhhhhhh.
came home and even though it was 8:15 p.m., decided to wash my filthy car
made a snack and finished the House episode; got caught up on LJ and email

Tomorrow I have two meetings, one with the executive director at the health center for whom I'm creating this database (what a steep learning curve!!), and then lunch with the director of the poetry center. As of tomorrow I'll have choir rehearsals every night, so not much down time. I do still hope to be able to have a new post of my original fic by the weekend, or during, and I'll be posting my [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest fic on Wednesday. Woot! New fic from me! Shocking, I know. :P It is anymore these days. Maybe I will write another couple of Gimli-centric gapfillers, and there is the Lee/Andrei…

Most of you know I've recently joined a choir again, which is just so good for my spirit, I can't begin to tell you. Anyway, I'm back into the fray just in time to begin Lent, and the church where I'm singing, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, is singing the Duruflé Requiem as part of the Ash Wednesday service this Wednesday the 25th at 7 o'clock. I've sung most of the movements, but I'll definitely have a bit of an adrenaline rush singing it with only three full rehearsals! The choir is good, and actually has more men than women— that's a first for me in any semi-professional choir I've sung in. The guest organist is David Heller. We rehearsed after the service yesterday and our director, John Stege, pointed out the difficulty in the organ part, and Mr. Heller is quite accomplished. My mom is in the AGO (American Guild of Organists) and I grew up attending organ recitals, and even took organ myself for a couple of years, as well as working for an organist/choir director. I can evaluate an organist, anyway, and he's pretty good! There are parts with what must be the super-low 32' stop and the floor truly rumbles underfoot. :)

So for any of your flisters who live in the Portland area, if you observe Lent and want to experience the Requiem in the context of a service, or if you want to ignore the service part and hear the work anyway, I invite you to attend.

Hmmmm. I really do need to make a Portland or pacific northwest icon.

I watched another Film Movement movie Friday night, a truly quirky Australian film that somehow I'd missed since it's coming out in 2003 (I do try to keep up somewhat with Aussie films), He Died With a Felafel in his Hand. I really enjoyed it, especially since the first part of it takes place in Brisbane in an old Queenslander, which just reminded me of how much I need to go back and visit! I don't think any review of it I can cobble together would do it justice; the lead character keeps insisting he's a thwarted writer and keeps moving and living with a slew of seemingly random people (I wasn't sure if some were former school or uni friends or what) with a truly eclectic cast of characters. He goes from Brisbane to Melbourne to Sydney, and I was proud of myself to note that the intro scenes for each location start out the same way, but different; variations on a theme. Recommended. And any movie that starts out with "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers (see icon!) is excellent in my book.

I spent most of today at church which is a rarity for me these days. I don't sing regularly in choir anymore since my hours mean that I can't attend any rehearsals, and frankly, I enjoy having my Sundays as down time. Still, I'd been asked to sing a Lenten Evensong, and so I did, but I went in in the morning for a soprano sectional and then regular rehearsal and the service. Between that service and the afternoon rehearsal I had Grand Intentions of getting my oil changed, but the place only had 2 people working, one of whom was the front desk person. So I gave up. I went to TJ Maxx instead, and then rocked out in my car to Xavier the iPod and my knitting. The Evensong went pretty well.

I've had good conversations with some friends this weekend, though one person is going through a particularly excruciating time emotionally and psychologically, and I feel wounded for him. I'm about to write the last complete post for my first ever foray into Wraeththu fanfic which, being me, has become a novella. This last part is going to be rough emotionally, as are the first few from the other character's POV, and I continue to struggle with Ashmael's reasonings/outlook on things, so I may post in [livejournal.com profile] raythoo about it to see if I can get insights from other folks. I do still struggle in that I can't talk with most of you lovelies about it because my flist is primarily HP and Tolkien fan-based. Nothing wrong with that, but I guess I do feel a little isolated. Oh well. It's all [livejournal.com profile] callumjames' fault for telling me about the series last summer and then buying the initial trilogy as a house-warming gift. I'm so glad that [livejournal.com profile] sexyscholar is starting to read Wraeththu so I can squee with her about stuff.

Speaking of Callum, a special congratulatory shout out to you and [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins for your wins at bestmates! I'm a bit sad that I didn't make it into the winner's circle this year, but that's how these things go.
