Veranda

I've been working on a website so that I have my own personal archive should anything happen to HASA or Parma. *shudder* This has been quite the enterprise, since I'm just using HTML code 'cause I don’t have one of those fancy "make your own website" programs and no money. The other challenge has been that I've been working on it both at work (yes, I know, shame on me) where I have a PC, and at home, where we have a Mac. So I've been switching platforms, programs, you name it.

Enough of my moaning. Last night, however, I had a breakthrough which explained why none of my documents were in my font of choice, veranda. I had tried every combination of "font-family," or "font-class" and by golly, it was always still times new roman, the font of choice for both computer browsers. I complained about this briefly to my husband, and he said, "That's not the name of the font. It's 'verdana." I just stared at him. "You're kidding," I replied. "No. I thought you were just being funny about it and calling it veranda. Why would the font be named after a porch?" I still didn't believe him, so I opened up a word document, and went to the font pull-down menu. Well, call me the Queen of Gondor. Sure enough, it's "verdana." ARGGGGGHHH!!! I prefered calling it veranda, and will continue to do so. Now I get to go back through all of those HTML documents and change the transposed letters. Maybe Times New Roman isn't so bad after all... but no, I'm just anal enough to want a cohesive look through the site, if I can help it. We don't have the kids this weekend, so perhaps I'll fix them then.

For fun today, I'm going to my stepdaughter's advanced class to help out another student's mother who is teaching them how to knit. For fun (since I'm slowly figuring out how to do this website thing, with special nods of thanks to long-suffering [livejournal.com profile] palarran and [livejournal.com profile] edeainfj, here's a picture (and sorry it's huge; from now on I'll resize things!) of the sweater I knitted for my best friend here in Nashville and person who has been so supportive of my fanfiction writing. The picture was taken on the back porch of my dad's house where I went for Christmas. It was quite cold. Amy's sweater.

Argh!!

Strikes me this the time to learn about style sheets, perhaps?!?

Ummm... is somebody offering me a class?! I'd love to. I know good and well that I'm doing this the hard way, but I don't have anybody around me who knows how to do it! And my husband has a blog, not a website. I may take a class, actually, but if you cared to point me into a helpful direction, I would be most grateful. :)

If HTML tags control the appearance of particular bits of text, style sheets are what you use to control the same kinds (or classes) of text across all your web pages. You tell the webpages which style sheet to use, and then those styles are applied to as many pages as you like.

So, rather than going through each page one by one and removing references to the veranda (*g*), you can set up a style sheet which tells all your webpages: 'Whenever I indicate that text is of a certain class, make the text font verdana'.

Sizzling HTML Jalfrezi has a tutorial and code examples linked from here. Hope this helps!

Oh Altariel, you are TRULY a goddess!! What a great site! I don't have my stepkids this weekend, so I'm going to spend some time fixing everything I can on the site, and thanks to this reference, it shouldn't be quite as painful as it has been!! Thank you, THANK YOU!!!

lmao. In my mind I've always pronounced it as veranda. I think this is the first time I've ever looked at how it's actually spelled.

And the sweater is gorgeous! It must have taken you *forever* to make that!

YAY! So it's not just me...

Thanks about the sweater. Actually, that's one of the fastest projects I've ever worked on. I started it in late October/early November and knitted it up in about 6 or 7 weeks. o_O I've never knitted that fast, but at first I was trying to get it done in time for her birthday (end of November) and then knew that would never happen. Usually I'm not so speedy!

great stuff
