thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Rohirric doorwards)

This one is dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] altariel1 as a belated birthday gift, but it works with the others recently posted.

Day Two: Approach

Faramir paced his room, the walls, the courtyards. Despite his many footfalls, restfulness remained ever ahead of him; tragedy lurked behind in his dim shadow. His feet took him to the Houses' kitchen, where, unsurprisingly, he found Meriadoc.

"Steward!" the hobbit exclaimed, scooting back from the table.

"No, no, please be as you were." Faramir sat down across the board. He felt an unlooked-for kinship with the halfling, his wounds shackling him to the stone walls of Minas Tirith as he himself was bound. Despite Meriadoc's stature, Faramir knew a devoted solider when he saw one, and ached at their doubled impotence. Better to think of something else, even if only for a while. "You know the White Lady of Rohan."

The hobbit swallowed and dabbed at his mouth, vying for time before he answered.

"I knew Dernhelm, my lord. But I would be privileged to tell you of him."

I have been enjoying all these snippets and I love my birthday drabble!

Are you working them up into a story?

I'm so glad you're enjoying them!

Are you working them up into a story?

I hope to do so... thought I'd work through their relationship day by day from each of their points of view (from the intitial meeting until their betrothal, perhaps), though it may end up being too abrupt, not to mention short. :P But my "The Hours" was also short, and it seemed to be received not unfavorably.

How wonderful that you like the snippets! It's great to get back into the Ardaverse, much less Eowyn's head. ;)

I like. Dernhelm was definitely her finest incarnation!

So glad that you like it. Quite honestly, of all relationships within LotR, it's Eowyn and Merry's that fascinates me the most, simply because it's based on mistruth and secrecy. And then it all comes out in the open... and Tolkien hardly addresses it. So I can think and write about it all I want, lol!

Dernhelm to me is both incredibly brave and also shirking her responsibility, another reason why I find Eowyn/Dernhelm so compelling. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Very nice, K! I loved Merry's evasiveness, humourous and accurate (to my way of thinking).

Thanks, MM! I can just see him, with Faramir trying discreetly and lordly to plumb him for information, and poor Merry thinking, "Well, she was a he and neither one of us are supposed to be here now, much less when we left Rohan, and what on earth can I say?"

So glad that you liked it. Per the comment above to [livejournal.com profile] hafren, the Eowyn/Merry relationship intrigues me to no end. Especially since JRRT leaves their entire travelling time together unwritten, just waiting for someone like me to fill in the gaps with my imagination. *g*

These snippets are so much fun! So, do you find yourself with a long line of people anxious to Beta for you? :)

LOLOL!!! No, not at all. I usually beg [livejournal.com profile] llembas whenever I actually finish something, just because I know how great she is and she's beta'ed both HP and Tolkien for me. Right now the difficulty is in finishing stuff! Thanks for beta'ing the new R/D; I really appreciate it.

And I'm glad you like the snippets!
