Falling in love with Eugene
Oct. 3rd, 2011 03:22 pmWell, okay, I haven't actually seen all that much of Eugene, but I can tell that I'd be quite happy here. In fact, maybe happier here than Portland in that the size is so much more manageable. But I'll start out in Portland and settle in and see how it goes. My friend Jen rents a cottage just across a small bit of lawn from the house where the owners are. The lawn isn't overly manicured, but tended to, with several vegetable patches and clusters of flowers. It's beautiful, and the view of the nearby mountains makes my heart sing. Another element that seems more uniquely northwestern or indicative of an area known (I think) for its more hippie-ish population is that she has an outside shower! It's off to the side of the deck with a screen made of an unknown organic material that you pull across and then shower away, with a wooden fence and various high foliage for privacy. The next door neighbors also have this beautiful large- and twisty-limbed tree with moss growing on it that I admired while showering this morning. Of course once the weather gets too cold, Jen will use the large tub in her bathroom in the downstairs of the house, but I'm sharing her love of the outdoor shower.
We went up to her aunt and uncle's house a couple of nights ago to have a more 'conventional' dinner versus the super-healthy, super-organic food she's been cooking for me. We also had a fire and even made s'mores. Haven't done that in years. This has been an interesting test of our friendship to spend 10 days together nearly 24/7 in a space about 300 square feet- we've groused at each other on a few occasions about various things (food for her, money for me) but she's talked me down from a few incidents of abject panic and I feel all the stronger for this time here.
I did research yesterday about internet options that won't bankrupt me and will accommodate both my beloved desktop and the laptop I have on loan and should be able to be hooked up at Julia's by the end of the week. One of my former Portland Opera buddies and friend who re-entered my world this past spring, actually, has invited me to join him to the Portland Ballet's dress rehearsal Friday night. So I already have a buddy to go and get some culture within two days of Portland re-entry. My roommate is going to be flabbergasted, slightly jealous, or both. I really am looking forward to being back in that interesting house and appreciating the experience for what it is.
I'll still be more sporadic in posting than usual; I'm not doing Pottermore, I've pretty much gone into dormant mode with all of my fandoms and haven't written on my original novel in ages. But I'll drop by from time to time and keep you all posted. :)
