I'm working on a story and even with my Atlas of Middle Earth, I'm uncertain how far it is from Edoras to Helm's Deep, especially if someone is riding a horse. Would it take a couple of hours? A day? I'm setting this post-WR when everything is peaceful but after my last mistake with my dwarf-centric story, I want to get my details right. I could probably spend a couple of hours looking through my copy of LotR and figure it out, but thought some of you who've set a lot of stories in Rohan could assist me. Any help is appreciated. :)

This is the site/document I use for all mileage and horse questions. Check it out. It tends to have everything--distances and riding times from point A to point B.

That's excellent! I've decided to put this guy in a small hamlet nearer to Helm's Deep. :)

Oh I didn't know about that site. What a useful thing. Gad, is there anything one can't find somewhere on the net?

I love her descriptions of horses also. She has a lot of terrific advice/links on how to make the horses in one's stories really live and breath. I used to be in a writing group with her. Didn't just randomly run across this stuff.

I think it's a long day's ride (at a high-moderate pace, allowing for breaks, etc.), 1.5-2 days hurried horse-walk pace, or 3-5 days walking.

But that's just my impression; the details for travel to Helm's Deep are not exactly laid out/specified so far as I've been able to tell.

Yeah, I think it's too far, so I'll put my guy in a small village nearer it. A made up village, that is, lol. Thanks for the input!

I believe, though am not sure, but it took about ten minutes while I was watching the movie. :D

LOL sorry. I know. I need to be properly punished. The story sounds awesome and I can't wait to read. I do have a question, for the life of me I don't know what - WR means.

You've a peaceful looking journal.

- hugs and hugs -

LOL! Right. A very short trip. WR= War of the Ring. So it's set within the first 10 years after that's happened and the world is mostly peaceful again.

Thanks about the journal! Today has just SUCKED.
