Between 5:40 a.m. (when I woke up suddenly, having dreamt about my coworkers, lawyers, being in a mall in Seattle and telling some random people I grew up in Wenatchee, and my George/Remus story) and 9 a.m., I managed to:

-pack for my trip tomorrow (one suitcase for the wedding I'm attending, and one for the other 9 days of schlepping stuff around from New Jersey to Virginia and back)

-write another 3 paragraphs in said George/Remus story

-bake banana bread with walnuts and a few chocolate chips for good measure

-reply to [livejournal.com profile] licia_north's lovely letter (well, technically I did that last night)

-get completely freaked out about flying tomorrow.

I've realized that it's not actually flying that bothers me; I like flying. I love being miles away from everybody, sequestered against the window in the back row (my preferred place to sit), listening to the music I want to since I can only sleep if I'm on Qantas. I'm only going to NY, so no chance there. What I'm afraid of, besides dying with a bunch of strangers, is of dying and having so much stuff unfinished. Perhaps that's why I've written so much this past year, and why I probably won't sleep tonight and will be finishing the George/Remus story. It's ridiculous, I know, but my book about how to deal with flying fears does indicate that it's usually people with vivid imaginations who suffer the most, because we let our crazy vision-filled minds go nuts with the way we'll crash and burn. I used to watch "Fearless" before flying, that movie in which Jeff Bridges survives a plane crash. I finally sold it. Now I just pretend that I'm one of my suave younger stepsisters, who don't worry about such things, or one of our board members who flies all the time. Rational people don't get all in a frenzy about a stupid flight. I try to look nonchalant and disaffected, concentrating on my knitting, ignoring the ridiculous thoughts in my head about everything I'll be leaving unfinished (stories, baby blanket, dispersal of possessions since I still haven't filled out a will, my responsibilites for judging in the Mithrils. The last I know should be laughable, but it's why I asked my friend Amy to be a "secret keeper" to alert people in fandom in a worst-case scenario since we all go by pseudonyms. I'd hate for my reputation to be tarnished because they thought I was simply ignoring their emails). I should be far more worried about figuring out what to do with my life, but that's just so hard to grasp, y'know? On the other hand, I suspect it's only those of us who think that it's a miracle every time they do land safely who experience actual euphoria when arriving at the airport, rather than boredom, but it's sure hell on the 'ol nerves and stomach.

Must say that I'm astounded by 'Brother Fire,' the G/R story. It's 22 pages. It'll probably be about 6 more before I'm done. And I really have enjoyed writing it, despite my original apprehension of making it a believable pairing.

I do the same thing when I fly. In fact, I tend to do it when I'm driving or in any other situation where something horrible could happen. And I worry about the same things - what will happen to all the things I've left undone? It's a very disturbing and unsettling feeling.

As for the G/R story, I'm so excited to read it! I know you had trepidations regarding writing George as not-straight, but the fact that it's flowing so well for you bodes well! And if you can accept George as not-straight, it's just a teeny step further to see the true love that is F/Hr.

I wouldn't be me if I hadn't put that last sentence in there.

Anyhoo, I know you have a beta lined up for the G/R, but if you'd like someone else to look it over, I'd be happy to, and, if not, I look forward to reading it.

LOLOL!!!

You're so right. If only I could see beyond Ron/Hermione, but I just have issues. Maybe some therapy will help. :P

I have no beta lined up, and if your sleeping schedule is anything like mine (you with the new bub, me just with not sleeping, and at the office at 11:30 p.m. to update the fic), please, feel free to read and beta at will. I have it posted at my website. Don't be put off by the html title and the new story title; I changed it in my head while mowing the front yard this evening. Pages 1-23 (approx) of Brother Fire Cartography of Fire is
here (http://www.thrihyrne.net/BrotherFire.html).

Would love your comments. I suspect I shan't sleep much until I'm safely up north, and then will crash. Then commence again. Maybe even with F/Hr. Weirder things have happened. Like me writing this story.

In gratitude,

~Thevina

Seriously, F/Hr is canon. Honest. *blinks*

I shall get to the story this weekend, if that's all right, as things have been a little crazy this first week home. But I'm expecting to have a little time to myself this weekend, even if I have to cry to get it. Hee.

Have a great trip and congrats on your paper!

An update on the G/R story: it's now renamed, html-wise. It's here:
www.thrihyrne.net/Cartography.html.

More smut to ensue this evening, providing that my parents don't get back too soon. I don't dare write it up in a Word document and then go off for two days, so I'm going to go ahead and hard-code it and post it, but the URL has now officially changed.

Wow. I'm such a good geek I was able to download the free Mac FTP software and change my website! Woot!

I didn't want you to think I was all neglectful or anything. I just received the comment in the mail! Gotta love LJ sometimes, no?

Glad your trip went well and, as you know, I love the fic.

Yeah! I got something like 7 LJ replies yesterday from this same time period, in late June. Many of them I had noticed at the time, but a couple were new. Go figure. :P

And am glad you like the smut! Your beta was really tremendous for the story. Thanks again. If I ever finish another effing story, I may call on you again for beta'ing, if you don't mind. Really good beta readers are few and far between, I find.

Gotta love LJ, don't you?

I'm glad the beta was to your liking and I'd be happy to do it again in the future. Just drop me an email and I'll do what I can for you.

*reminds self that she has two betas to finish*

Sister, I am SO there. Terrified of flying (it shouldn't be able to! It weighs tons!) and vividly imaginative (every airline horror story I've ever heard- and there are many- playing in my head).

I'm taking a trip to another continent next week, and it doesn't comfort me that my mommy will be with me -- in fact that makes it worse, as I suspect my father is the least resilient of the three of us; i.e., least able to withstand the sudden loss of 2/3 of the triad we've always been.

Hate it. Hate it. But I hate the idea of being dominated and limited by fear more. So I take the tranks my mom gets from her doctor (she has the fear worse than I do, but doesn't let it rule her), tell my guy I love him before I leave, pray to my Raven spirit-friend to bear me up on black wings, and hope for the best.

dammit.

(I have 'secret keepers' too. Hee. Great name for it.)

Thank you so much for your kind words- I'm feeling fine about it all now; I went ahead and was stupid/dorky and emailed the person I was writing the fic for, and my more rational side says, "Just how special do you think you are?" As in, the statistical possibility of me being in a plane crash today is HIGHLY unlikely, and I'm just not *that* special.

Plus, I just found out, completely out of the blue, that my "Under the Waterfall: paper has been included in 'Refractory' (http://www.refractory.unimelb.edu.au/journalissues/index.htm), a University of Melbourne publication. I'm about to post the hell out of this, but here's their summary:

Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media is a quarterly, refereed, peer-reviewed, e-journal that explores the diverging and intersecting aspects of current and past entertainment media.

The journal is published by the Cinema Studies Program, School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology, University of Melbourne.
