In looking through my flist last night I stumbled across the talents of [livejournal.com profile] aunty_marion who has made some incredible knitted HP characters and even "mini me"s of them! Pictures can be found here at her Flickr page and also here at her knitting and embroidery website. Wow. Such creativity! On my to do list for today is a trip to the yarn store I like. I have two new projects to start and to get their advice on my coral sweater in progress with the rapidly depleting amount of yarn that I cannot buy more of. ::pulls out hair:: Also I've discovered that while I can take my knitting needles in my carry on luggage, in order for them to most likely get through security, they need to be circulars, under 31 inches, and must be plastic or bamboo. AUGH. Most all of mine are metal. What about double-pointed bamboo? Have any other knitters on my flist flown domestically recently with a project in their carry on? Advice gratefully received on the topic. When I flew British Airways last October, they said all knitting needles were prohibited. The TSA website gave the guidelines for length and type, but I would be especially grateful for any recent anecdotes.

I may try to write a little bit this morning, but I may finish the Five Quarts book instead. I'm letting the Silm fic sit for a few days after writing the epilogue. I may also take a couple of requests for short stories as I'll be between stories here pretty soon unless Storm emails back her edits on M+M in the near future. Then I'll be back to that. As an aside, I participated in this year's [livejournal.com profile] weasley_fest and am very pleasantly surprised at how well received my primary contribution has been received— it's anonymous until the reveal, and I've received some reviews from people who probably haven't read anything else of mine before. Quite gratifying.

Six days and counting to my trip to Hooterville!! ♥ I'm hoping to see The Movie with my boys. Haven't seen it here yet, but I've been reading everybody's spoilers so I don't get my hopes up. ;)

I also discovered a new word: swain: poetic/literary, a young lover or suitor. Sure to appear in a fic near you in the next few months.

And you all?

I don't knit, as you know, but can you not check a bag and put the knitting needles in that?

Yes, but the point is that I want to be able to work on a project if I'm unable to sleep. I almost never can sleep on domestic flights, and I'm taking a red eye. :sigh: So I wanted to have something to do. I can't usually concentrate on reading, not always on writing, but knitting I can do. Hence wanting to be able to take something on board. ;)

Ah - I thought it was to have them at the destination more than during the travel. Gotcha.

It's during travel that's most important. I hate that I can't knit on long international flights anymore! I used to get so much done going to Australia. :(

Sorry I have no useful anecdotes about knitting needles. I am still seething about changing planes on my last trip, being totally dehydrated, having received only a cup of ice with a splash of diet coke on the previous flight, and not being able to bring aboard the very expensive bottle of water I had just purchased. So stupid--fight against terrorism my ass! (Of course, I had to wait almost an hour then before getting my next couple of ounces of fluid! I have ridden in the back of trucks in the wilds of the Andes decades ago that were more comfortable than the average commercial airline these days.)

Eeeps! I am so lost in research for my Wraeththu story at the moment that it is pretty much all I can think about. Re-reading everything and finding so many tiny hidden treasures I had apparently glossed over in my previous readings.

Yes, commercial airline travel domestically leaves a lot to be desired. I thoroughly enjoyed being on British Airways last fall.

Re-reading everything and finding so many tiny hidden treasures I had apparently glossed over in my previous readings.

Oooh! When I first read that comment, I thought you were referring to re-reading your own story, and I was so excited for you! But it's research. ;) Still, great to find those little gems, isn't it? I can still remember how shocked I was to find while doing research for my story about Thengel and Morwen that both Turgon and Fengel died the same year (2953) so that both Rohan and Gondor had a change in rulers in the same year. A lot of upheaval!

Can't wait to read your fic!!

Oh, I wish! But noooo.... It is fun. But I have to confess that the previous Wraeththu stories I have written to this point have been pretty self-indulgent--a cross between blowing off steam and love letters to the characters that have so enthralled me. So writing a real story is a challenge. I'll probably need some help and feedback from you at some point, but not far along enough now.

P.S. I love British Airways too and Air France. But I even prefer various Latin American airlines for the better ambience than U.S. carriers, even though they are often using retired, re-cycled U.S. planes!
