This site was just forwarded to me and is both hilarious and right on in regards of things not to do when writing, whether it be fanfiction or otherwise, slash or whatever.

p.s. Yes, [livejournal.com profile] edrys, I've already put it at HASA's URL library. Aren't I efficient?! :D

p.s. #2: (edit, 10:22 p.m.) found out that this article is a few years old, hence why DS9 features so prominently and Tolkien so little. Oh well. I think her points are still valid. And humorous.

That sounds interesting, but the link won't work for me.

Hmmm. I just linked on it, and it did. It's http://mosca.freeservers.com/fanfic/witness.html

Hopefully that will work!

*applause*

Good site. Though of course few-to-none refs to the Ardaverse. Ah well.

Must not be her background. Although when in the "style" section she writes about eyes never being 'orbs,' the first thing I thought about was a lot of stories I've read which feature Frodo definitely in the Elijah Wood mode with big, blue orbs for eyes. :P

Oh certainly - I took a look at her recs page and I don't think she reads in the LotR 'dom, which is fair enough. I still bookmarked the commentary page; wonder if I could get away with giving it as a resource to my students? Probably not, because of language/obscenity references (Bible belt, and all that). Too bad.

"Orbs" - I get this wonderful image of marbles rolling around. Or royal scepters, with a big old stick jutting out from the face. Though personally the use of gemstones to describe color peeves me more, e.g. "sapphire orbs" or "ebony hair" or whatever. Those examples are in fact tame and dull compared to some of the weirdies out there.

I once read a story in which Harry had "sprinkling green orbs". I kid you not.

All I can think about is sparkly green confetti. Which makes me think about that ridiculous Quidditch match.

Yikes.

So glad that you are writing with your excelling wordcraft!!

I think i have read versions of this essay -- and some of the examples still had me howling with laughter! (Not that I am the world's best grammarian... but still) And I'm sorry, whenever people write about Frodo's orbs, I get totally creeped out. Tolkien never described Frodo's eyes like that -- it must be the Elijah connection (no offense to Mr. Wood, his eyes ARE beautiful...)

It was a wonderful reminder of what not to include in a story!

Yes, you are! :-)

I finally got a chance to peek (not pique) ;-) at the site (not cite)...please stop me any time... :-p Aiie! The homophones alone had me rolling my eyes in despair. I haven't gone past the grammar section yet though. If I need scraping off the floor when I do so, I'll let out a yell or something. ;-)

Well, I've updated it a few times since I originally posted it, so age isn't so much the issue. I've never really been into Tolkien fandom; I've used mainly examples from fandoms I follow more closely. Lots of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and E.R. sample sentences in there, too.
