thrihyrne: Portland, OR (luminous Eowyn for euclase)
[personal profile] thrihyrne
It was fun! I got there not long after the first movie started, and ended up sitting in the third row. I hadn't realized just how popular this event was, and was so glad that it was a Portland tradition of sorts. It was, in fact, sold out, movie-wise, in regards to seating. I ended up being there solo, which was just fine. At the first break between movies, I saw a woman dressed as a hobbit and I just knew that I knew her from my one and only Barlibash, the infamous event in Bellevue, WA in 2002 (I'd thought it was '03!) when I first met [livejournal.com profile] snottygrrl. So I approached said woman and asked if she'd attended the Barlibash in Bellevue years ago, to which she said, "Yes..."
"Are you a harpist?" I asked, remembering that element as well.
"Yes!" She was indeed the same person. Such a small world fandom can be. She'd also attended the Two Towers/One Party Oscar Party I attended in Los Angeles back in the day, which ended up landing me in a color NYTimes photo above the fold the following year when RotK was up for so many awards.

During today's event, I cheered for Gimli. I was told my dress was gorgeous. There were 25 adults who participated in the costume contest, and I was in the top 8, so I now have a McMenamin's gift certificate. :) Oh, and the guy dressed as one of the Nazgul won. Apparently he's also a Portland Tolkienfest tradition. His costume was fabulous. I chatted with the Arwen in my pics for a while as well; we had a mutual admiration conversation about really caring about doing the research and sewing one's own outfits. There are still always far more Elves and Hobbits; almost never any other Éowyns. :sigh:

I'm sure you're just dying for the few pics that I did take, or not. But if you're curious,

Tiffany and Thevina

Thev and Nazgul and Arwen

Legolas (yes, it's his real hair; he got third place) and a self-proclaimed Gandalf the Young

The woman with greenery strapped to her as an Ent was in the top 5; her companion said she was Legolas, but really, she was much more a peppy Cupid-looking entity with real arrows strapped to her back. Still, she was enthusiastic!

This was just a shot of some of the folks in the contest.

Maybe there'll be something about this in The Oregonian, but I have no idea.

I think most of you know this, but I'll be moving tomorrow, into a very positive environment but also one in which I won't have dedicated internet until Tuesday. My friends down the road do have internet, so I won't be totally unplugged, but I may well be more sporadic than usual (especially on a holiday, which it is for me on Monday) until Tuesday evening. It may also mean that I'll actually get my holiday postcards written up and sent out!

Glad you enjoyed the pictures! I slept almost none last night; wicked winds, and just general freak-outery about moving and all that kind of stuff. Glad that I'll be able to take the evening easy and have a holiday tomorrow!!

((hugs))

It is!! There was a woman there from the NWesternesse group, and Tiffany explained to her that it was this particular Barlibash that brought together the original founders.

Next year you and I can go together!! :)

It was very low key in many ways, but yes, it was fun. The move has, unsurprisingly, messed with my sleep. That and some crazy wind that Portland has going on. :sigh: Thankfully the evening should be quiet, and tomorrow's a holiday!

That looks like such a fantastic time! Thanks for sharing these pictures. You, as always, look fabulous.

Best wishes with the move. I'll be sending good thoughts your way and looking forward to your update when you're all settled in. Cheers for you! *hugs*

It was a good time!! I still don't understand the bias against Éowyn, but at least there was one child in the children's competition who dressed as her. Vaguely, anyway. :)

I have a few more things to pack away, but otherwise I'm ready to get on over there! I'm glad that I'll have some down time as I didn't get much sleep last night, perhaps unsurprisingly.

I love that costume!

I hope this new space gives you the inner and outer peace that you need, yet gives you someone to talk, laugh, and share with as well.

Love the pics! Thanks for sharing them. It looks like a good time was had by all. Congtatulations on being in the top 8 costume-wise. You look so great as Eowyn! No one looks as much naturally like their character as you do. Got to love the "ent girl" very cute idea.

Good luck on the move and best wishes to be settled and happy there.

Glad you enjoyed these!! I think perhaps I should invest in a long, blonde, wavy wig, then people will figure out who I am, lol. I do resemble Miranda Otto in real life, but the wig would cinch the deal, I suspect.

Thank you for your kind words! If you want to send more of Saltrock (thanks for the email, BTW!) and your new story, feel free because I'll be able to put it on my flash drive down at Yvonne's and then edit at my new place. It'd be a welcome diversion. :)

Glad you had a good time, and congrats on the top 8 finish!

Oh, and Legolas in your pics is quite the hottie... :-)

EDIT: "top 8", not "8th place".

Thanks! Sadly, I was actually in 8th place. :( But I was also new. And not as funny as #6, who had draped a blanket of sorts around him and was ostensibly a hobbit, with ale in hand. When he introduced himself, he said, "I'm a little drunk!" Quite the crowd-pleaser. :P

The Legolas was pretty cute, and young. And I'm sure he has a fan base now. *g*

It was fun!! I'm sure there's something like that in L.A. of all places. :D

Thank you! We have cold weather with some wicked wind action. :sigh: But it's not raining. Now if only I'd been able to get some sleep...

Thank you, my friend! I know you've been really, really sick; I'm just glad to hear that you're feeling better!

The move should be okay; I'm just feeling all weepy and tired and wanting to curl up but that won't happen until later. Still, it'll be good to be in the new place, and hopefully the wind here will die down by tonight. Being unplugged from the internet is making me all itchy, even if it's for pretty much a day and a half!

Thank you!! The move was thankfully uneventful and not painful at all. I'm in the new place and it's such a healthier environment for me, already. I do need to hang up a few things of my own on the walls and get a bookcase set up and my modem arrives tomorrow. Once I'm plugged back into the internet, I'll be ready to go! I have a space heater and everything, because it's an older house and has no central heat. Yikes. But it'll be okay. :)

I'll be sending out cards this week, so keep an eye on your mailbox!

Thanks so much!! I was rather disappointed to get 8th place, but I'm glad that I competed and placed and got a gift certificate. *g* It was so much fun to see the movies on the big screen again, too, with a bunch of fen and folks who just wanted to be there.

Thanks so much! I noticed that my face does look a bit odd in the pictures; I think it's that I was flushed due to the heat. I'm quite pale, truly, and don't have a tan. I reckon it was the velvet being worn indoors. I may have gotten a little bit of a windburn, though!!

You do make a very good Eowyn! Congratulations on the placing. Don't know why not more people go for an 'Eowyn', she is great in the books, if not so much in the movie...
And good luck with moving!

Thanks so much!! I'm going to need to invest in a good blonde wig, I think, and that way I'll be a true looking Eowyn. I really don't understand why more people don't go as her at fan events, but it seems to be lots of elves, elves, elves...

The move thankfully was painless. I'll post pictures of the next place in the next week or so! Oh, and I heard from Rainwish!!! :D
