Mr. Thev printed out this handy article for me so I will share it with you, fellow writers: Ten Mistakes Writers Don't See (But Can Easily Fix When They Do)

Pretty clever. I put it in the HASA URL library as well.

For fun, I think I'll include this picture in "SFAE" which is "To Narvi: Rockwright: Elf-Friend" in Dwarvish runes.

Last but not least, I've just checked out "At Swim, Two Boys" and can't wait to get in it, though I'm now worried about the Irish brogue and not understanding what's going on. And I have a really long choir rehearsal tonight, so I doubt I'll get started on it until the weekend. But knowing how many of you have read it and love it, I'm really looking forward to getting absorbed in it.

I wish I were outside going to a long run- the weather is gorgeous and slightly windy, but I went to the library on my lunch hour instead and since we have the kids I won't be able to run after work. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow. Another unexpected coolness: somebody else from my university who is a slash writer and knitter. I couldn't believe it. :D *waves to [livejournal.com profile] dmarley.

And I made a funny absent Gimli avatar. Heh.

Oh, you're reading The Book! Wonderful. Don't worry about not understanding what's going on; I found that words or phrases I didn't recognize were clearly understandable from the context. The first section is possibly the most challenging, but it's well worth it. Also, you can always go to [livejournal.com profile] fortyfoot and ask if you have any questions; there are lots of people there who've read the book repeatedly and who would be happy to help.

Thanks for your email, by the way-- I'm not ignoring you! Just haven't had a chance to write back.

Minx, you are fabulous! I have joined the group. I'm really looking forward to reading the book; last night I was proofing a friend's article so I haven't started it yet, but I'm planning on it this weekend.

Quite alright. I just love your stories and wanted to tell you how much I enjoy them after repeated readings. :D

much ado about "at swim, two boys"...have just checked and it's in my local library. might see if I can get it out and read before I skip town. perhaps a tad ambitious but it's noted for future consumption nonetheless!

re adverbs in the writing mistakes list: Stephen King rails against adverbs in his non-fiction book On Writing and I've always remembered it. having carved a heck of a lot of dead wood from my prose projects since then, it was a lesson well learned. I still use a lot of padding in my chatty writing (indicative of my thought processes...) but other writing gets more sleek. usually. hah.

Yeah- all of my fellow slashers seem to have read it and love it. That's enough for me. ;) Plus I wanted something new besides Mary Renault, which I read a lot of last year. If you do read it, let me know and we can compare notes!

Adverbs. [livejournal.com profile] qowf railed against my adverbs in her beta'ing of "The Hours," and it did help a lot in 'sleeking' it, as you said. I'm more wary of adverbs and overuse of adjectives in a way that I wasn't when I first started writing. Live and learn!

For which your friendly Resources admin thanks you! :-D And please extend my thanks to Mr. Thev. It can be reassuring to note that "professional" writers are capable of making some of the same mistakes that we amateurs do. ;-)

I do what I can. :D And since it's in HASA's guidelines to promote better writing, where better to place it?! Yes, it is reassuring to know that no writer is perfect.

The writing mistake list was amusing. Though it might be more accurate to call them "bad habits."

The crutch word problem is one that pops up over and over, so much so that I have considered adding a line to all of my fics that say "featuring the word grate" or whatever the crutch word happens to be in that particular story. I find it changes, so you have to keep your eyes open.
