I'm sitting at my office at 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon, crying. I swear, I have done everything that I'm supposed to for the CSS sheets thanks to the very well-written site recommended to me by [livejournal.com profile] altariel1 but, *insert many exceedingly foul and loudly screamed explatives here*

IT ISN'T WORKING.

I still can't get it to do "verdana" (now that I know it's not "veranda") unless I type it in, and the font is still too big. I gave up working on this abysmal soul-sucking project that I'm now calling 'My Failed Attempt at a Website' at home, on the Mac, because I can't figure out how to tell the *explative* browser to actually pay attention to what said stupid code-monkey-wanna-be indicated instead of overriding it.

I think I'll just leave the stupid pages as they are. They aren't too ugly. It's just making me incensed because I know I'M NOT STUPID. I can follow directions. I look at people's source codes on their sites. I have an HTML book. And yet, when it comes down to it, evidently, I'm still an idiot because I can't get this to look the way I want it to. Can't wait to see how I mess it up next, and I haven't even gotten all of my stories up there. Grrrrr. Maybe I'll go write on my Celebrimbor/Narvi story. They're artisans. They understand what it's like to have things go wrong. Dammit.

The latter used to be a fave saying by my first college boyfriend, a wonderful man who I still adore on multiple levels.

Okay, breathe...

On the plus side, I just saw that [livejournal.com profile] edeainfj is going to be in Shreveport, too, when I visit [livejournal.com profile] palarran WPOIUA;LSIDKNG;LKN!!! GWAH!!!! Two of my favorite people in the fanfiction world, mentors of mine, and I get to see both of you??!

I'm already happily overwhelmed. :D :D

Argh! I'm sorry it's driving you insane :-( Sometimes the best thing to do is to put it aside and come back to it the following day. Does your HTML editor have a validator? Running it through that might pick up something simple like missing quotes or brackets.

If only. I am the HTML editor. I'm doing all of this myself in notepad. Or BBEdit if I'm at home on the borrowed Mac. *sigh* I'm sure it will be better tomorrow. I did, in the meantime, at least find a way to change the font to verdana, and have put some lovely lines at the bottom of most of the stories.

Thank you for your very kind comments, though. :)

A link to the HTML editor that I use, which is a cut down, pretty basic one, but has the benefit of being free (and seems to cope with all my requirements). Better than struggling with Notepad.

Cool! Thank you! I'll give the link a look after work today. And I promise I'll stop whining about my website from now on. ;)

thev - chill, girl :)

nothin' like computer hijinks to transport you to the end of the tether...

I have seen your page as it is at the moment and it is far from ugly. I know you're determined (ahem...stubborn) enough to persevere but just wanted to let you know that it ain't half bad as is. and love the pic.

great that you're going to meet jen and dd - do they realise how much wine needs to be involved...?? :o

lol.

Awwww... thank you, T. I've regained some composure since I wrote that, and changed the font for most of the stories. It's still frustrating, though, because I know that there is an easier way, but I just can't make it work. Ah well.

Jen and DD, like you, don't drink, so it will be an evening of fangirl bliss sans festive beverages. :) Or perhaps I'll bring my own wine. ;)

Is it already five months since I saw you? I miss you terribly. You understand me so well.

Ah, Peter Jackson's on tv. Should go listen. :P

One thing to note with changes to a style sheet (if you use a separate style.css file) is that IE caches the old style sheet for ages. To see the new styles working, you have to change the style sheet, upload, then delete the old style sheet in your temporary internet files. Even then it doesn't always seem to pick it up immediately. Opening and closing IE a few times often helps. I don't know if this applies to other browsers too, but it sounds like it might be a source of some of your woes.

Thank you for your help! I think I may have seen the light yesterday- I can make each document have the same css/text thingie rather than making an external one. It was the external one that was being a pain, but I bet (haven't quite had time yet, but hopefully soon!) that if I just use the lovely text that I found from a website guide page, I'll be in css heaven.

If only I didn't have a job and could just play around with my stuff! But I'm feeling stoked because I think I've finally figured out how to make my background picture not tile.

It would probably behove me to actually get all of the documents uploaded, but oh well. ;)
