OMGOMGOMG. I was just half a foot away from Philip Glass. We had a short conversation.

I've just had a short conversation with Philip Glass, who was practicing in the music studio next door. I was lurking in the hallway as he started and stopped, then after a while the door opened. He didn't look super startled to find me there. I told him how to find the men's restrooms (he asked) and I told him how much I was looking forward to his opera. He asked if I was in the production, and I said no, I was on the staff, but I'd begun seeing him live in 1991. "Here?" he asked, genuinely baffled. "No, in Nashville."

:D :D :D :D :D :D

This is definitely a highlight in my little life. Up close and personal. Wow. I'm totally starstruck.

HOLY SHIT! THAT IS AWESOME!

I'll bet you were grinning and blushing. I would have been! :D

I KNOW! IT IS!!!

I was actually surprisingly composed when we talked- he was another human, being, y'know? And shorter than I was! Which surprised me. I had my crazy grinning/blushing/crazy gesticulations once I was back in the Patron Services office. :)

OMG that is incredible! I had no idea he was here, or doing an opera, but I'm a fan of his music, and I'm very excited for you.

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! Our director of Marketing would be heartbroken that you didn't know at least that we were doing the west coast premiere of his opera, opening Friday! (hint! hint!) Oh man, if only I'd known you were a fan, I probably could have arranged for some tickets. ::cries::

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm almost impossible to market to--I hope your marketing director won't take it personally. :D

My culture quotient is pretty well filled these days with Portland Center Stage, but I'll have to see if there's a seat I can afford for Orphée.

Good for you! Those are the moments that make life worth living, aren't they?

That's way better than me interrupting an IM chat with IgnobleBard to run to the deli and buy milk for my morning coffee and came back to tell him that I had met my Fingon the Elf on the way to the corner and he asked me for directions to the F train. (OK. OK. So mine was only my image of a fictional character, but the guy asking directions was real, tall and lithe, dark and handsome, Noldorin-looking, had Fingon's dark blue eyes and I talked with him for two minutes.)

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oooooh! Running across a Fingon look-alike is no small thing! But yeah, this was a highlight of my life. My family will get a kick out of that, lol.

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed! :D

Wow, I'm jealous! That's like seeing Sting or Jack Nicholson for classical music-lovers! Back in the 70's, a friend gave Robert Redford directions to the Kennedy Center restaurant when she was lurking in the lobby waiting to be part of the audience for a scene in All the President's Men.

It really is! He was delightfully unassuming and I'm glad that I didn't stumble over my words or act too much like a crazy fangirl. But this was an absolutely amazing day. He was right in front of me!!!

That's awesome! :-D

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!! I really didn't expect to see him during his couple of days here, and then… there he was! Pretty amazing!

[identity profile] two-point.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I am so jealous! That's better than anything! I would have made a complete ass of myself, so I admire your composure.

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
It really was incredible. He was so… normal! I think I was so surprised I was just thinking, "Just be sure to tell him that you've liked his works a long time!" I was a raving squeeing fangirl lunatic once I was back in the Patron Services office, trust me. I will get grief for that for ages to come. :P

Hee, I wouldn't know Philip Glass if I fell over him. How great to meet him.

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he looks like this:

When I saw him, he had his glasses on. I was absolutely floored. It was a very quick conversation, but still! I got to tell him I loved his music!

HOLY FUCK GODDAMN THAT'S AWESOME

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
YES IT WAS!!!! UNBELIEVABLE. A DAY I'LL NEVER FORGET!!! :D

Your icon is perfect for that post, lol.

Cool.

That is fantastic! I met him once, but it was like 1990, so that was a WAY long time ago. He seemed pretty cool, though.

I just noticed that Phil Cutlip is in Orphee. I actually went to school with him and we were in choir together. He's an incredibly nice person and I love his voice.

Re: Cool.

That's great that you met him, too! He's very intelligent and articulate in a sometimes stumbling way, if that makes any sense. You went to school with our Orphée??! Wow! He's worked with Glass a couple of other times and was in the Glimmerglass production of Orphée.
