*falls off chair in 'independent academic' stupor*

I referenced a paper that was published in Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media, when I wrote "Under the Waterfall." I noticed that they were going to have a special edition dealing with fandom, so I sent them my paper, tho' it was just barely under deadline, and seeing as how this is peer-reviewed and all I have is a B.A. and my own obsession with writing quasi-academic papers on fanfiction for fun, I didn't expect anything.

Well, my friends, I got an email from them this morning. Apparently my paper, while not in the special edition, has somehow, by some act of grace, been included in their most recent volume. I had no idea.

Here's the summary of the journal from their website:

Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media is a quarterly, refereed, peer-reviewed, e-journal that explores the diverging and intersecting aspects of current and past entertainment media.

The journal is published by the Cinema Studies Program, School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology, University of Melbourne.

Link to the paper in their journal is here (don't even have the time to look at it as I should be finishing packing and going to the bloody airport).

Now if only they'll pay my way for me to come and present it at some conference they might host in the next year or two.

SQUEEE!!!

MEGASQUEEEEE!!!! Even without a PhD I've had my paper published in an Australian journal about current media!

:D :D :D :D :D :D

*breathes hotly on her knuckles and polishes them on her... bony chest...*

Sorry. Have really hot slash on the mind, which will hopefully be written in the next 48 hours. Can't say more than that without embarassing myself.

THANKS!!! :)

I am very proud.

FANDOM ROCKS!

Join the club. That happened to mine too - I was most surprised! Congrats.

Yes... yours was at the top of the list, I believe. Major kudos to you as well!! It's all thanks to you and your paper that I even found out about your LJ-presence, for which I am so grateful.

*makes mental note to go and read all of the articles, after getting a good night's sleep*

(((congratulatory hugs)))

Yay!! External validation is a great feeling.

Yes, 'tis. If only my mother didn't give me grief for feeling so overwhelmed. :P Can't help it. She has a PhD, my sister is an MD and my brother is fluent in something like 3 languages. So I get a bit protective and overly gratified when my obsession about fandom is acknowledged by Academe when I have no "paper" references...

*squees like the fangirl I am*

Thanks so much for your comment. *grins*

:D :D

I know how you feel. I am surrounded by doctors and profs at work but I haven't got a PhD either. I don't know if I could have, but at the time I should have been going for it, I was, like Bertie Wooster, full up with education and wanted to do something else, not to mention earn a living.

And hey, we can still write readable stuff with the ideas and commas in the right place, so who cares!

[identity profile] forodwaith.livejournal.com 2004-06-26 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Heyyy, super-cool. Go you!

I enjoyed the first article as well. Do I understand correctly that it was written by hafren?

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2004-06-29 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes it was- please pardon my delayed response; have been doing wedding duties for a friend. She (hafred) had a link on her LJ, and [livejournal.com profile] cathexys also has some summaries of the papers, not necessarily greenlighted in regards to content. I must admit that I haven't read the others; I found out about it prior to a trip and have been going full-boar ever since.

Whooohooot! Go Thevina! That is simply awesome. Pffft to higher degrees -- I've never even gotten my college degree (does that surprise you?) but so far it hasn't been a hindrance (OK, maybe job wise yes -- but to the things that really count with me? Naw. I enjoy learning, reading, can write and edit well. shrugs.) You are brilliant and don't need a piece o' paper to prove it! :) Congrats!

Whooohooot! Go Thevina!

*Goes about rampantly*

And, well, the journal may not be "all that and a bag of chips," as one saying goes, but I am absolutely thrilled. It's inspiring me even more to get in touch with the English department at one of the universities back in Nashville and their various Masters' programs, as it seems that it would make sense to go ahead and get the documentation, especially since one of their faculty members is a supporter of fanfic.

don't need a piece o' paper to prove it!

That's one of the really great things about fandom/cultural studies. There is a lot out there that is done within the system, and can be jargon-heavy, but there are a few others like me adding to the stew 'o work without the regular accreditation. It's part of the tension of writing about fandom and fandom participation; you can only get honest answers if you're actually a participant, which doesn't necessarily mean that you have the diplomas on the wall.

/me grabs cim_halfling for a belated spin around the Barli's skating rink

(are you going to Po and Elfriend's wedding?)

Oh, I am so late to this entry but, hey, better late than....y'know. Very thrilling to see yr work in that aca journal. Just having finished up a conference round, I would highly recommend getting a job in academia if you want to meet up with fun friends and go out and talk interesting stuff and have it all paid for by your institution...! :p

Now you're making me think of fanfiction confs that could possibly happen that don't look as if I am trying to get a friend over from Nashville...

[identity profile] thrihyrne.livejournal.com 2004-07-07 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Better late than never, my friend! BTW, my belated letter to you was just picked up by the mailwoman, so expect to hear from me in the next week or so. I'll have to send you an e-card for your birthday as I am now hopelessly late. :P

Now you're making me think of fanfiction confs that could possibly happen that don't look as if I am trying to get a friend over from Nashville...

Oooh! Please do! I'd love an excuse- any excuse- to come back down to Oz, especially to see you. Glad that you had a great time at your conference; I'm terribly behind in LJ checking but I'll try to do some this afternoon and see if you've written about it.
