*falls off chair in 'independent academic' stupor*
I referenced a paper that was published in Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media, when I wrote "Under the Waterfall." I noticed that they were going to have a special edition dealing with fandom, so I sent them my paper, tho' it was just barely under deadline, and seeing as how this is peer-reviewed and all I have is a B.A. and my own obsession with writing quasi-academic papers on fanfiction for fun, I didn't expect anything.
Well, my friends, I got an email from them this morning. Apparently my paper, while not in the special edition, has somehow, by some act of grace, been included in their most recent volume. I had no idea.
Here's the summary of the journal from their website:
Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media is a quarterly, refereed, peer-reviewed, e-journal that explores the diverging and intersecting aspects of current and past entertainment media.
The journal is published by the Cinema Studies Program, School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology, University of Melbourne.
Link to the paper in their journal is here (don't even have the time to look at it as I should be finishing packing and going to the bloody airport).
Now if only they'll pay my way for me to come and present it at some conference they might host in the next year or two.

Sorry. Have really hot slash on the mind, which will hopefully be written in the next 48 hours. Can't say more than that without embarassing myself.
THANKS!!! :)
I am very proud.

Yes, 'tis. If only my mother didn't give me grief for feeling so overwhelmed. :P Can't help it. She has a PhD, my sister is an MD and my brother is fluent in something like 3 languages. So I get a bit protective and overly gratified when my obsession about fandom is acknowledged by Academe when I have no "paper" references...
*squees like the fangirl I am*
Thanks so much for your comment. *grins*

And hey, we can still write readable stuff with the ideas and commas in the right place, so who cares!

I enjoyed the first article as well. Do I understand correctly that it was written by hafren?

*Goes about rampantly*
And, well, the journal may not be "all that and a bag of chips," as one saying goes, but I am absolutely thrilled. It's inspiring me even more to get in touch with the English department at one of the universities back in Nashville and their various Masters' programs, as it seems that it would make sense to go ahead and get the documentation, especially since one of their faculty members is a supporter of fanfic.
don't need a piece o' paper to prove it!
That's one of the really great things about fandom/cultural studies. There is a lot out there that is done within the system, and can be jargon-heavy, but there are a few others like me adding to the stew 'o work without the regular accreditation. It's part of the tension of writing about fandom and fandom participation; you can only get honest answers if you're actually a participant, which doesn't necessarily mean that you have the diplomas on the wall.

Now you're making me think of fanfiction confs that could possibly happen that don't look as if I am trying to get a friend over from Nashville...

Oooh! Please do! I'd love an excuse- any excuse- to come back down to Oz, especially to see you. Glad that you had a great time at your conference; I'm terribly behind in LJ checking but I'll try to do some this afternoon and see if you've written about it.
