By "stretching" I don't mean writing badly, but the opposite. In a lot of fandoms (Star Trek was my previous) anything as...complicated and word-rich...as most good LOTR writing would have people complaining it was too confusing or hard to read. People in LOTR are less tolerant of bad writing, but more tolerant of "difficult" writing, if you see the difference.
