Thank you! That had been plaguing me for a while. I completely understand using "har" in place of "man." Absolutely. The other usages have a tendency to hurt my eyes when I'm reading them, though it's gotten better the more immersed I've become in later stories. As an absolute substitute for "one," I thought about it a bit and asked my cat because Ivan would be offended if I wrote his dialogue with McGee (other cat) as if he were human.
Ivan walks into the room, glares balefully toward McGee and says, "Somecat stole my food."
McGee laughs: "Somecat?"
Ivan's ears flatten. "Someone. I said someone."
"No you didn't." McGee goes back to watching television.
