No, not to be feeling stupid. It's only if, say, one is really, really into the text that you go poring through the canon material. You've got to understand: this is what I did in my Tolkien fics, so I'm used to gleaning whole long stories from snippets of canon text.

And how much angst when I move on to Vaysh! There's this, OMG:

    "What has Thiede done to you?"
    He gave me a sad smile. "Oh, Pellaz. You know. You've suspected haven't you? I'm burnt out. At best, barren and at worst gutted. No, you were not the first…"

Hence why I was even more cruel in my story by having had 'my' Vaysh nearly have a harling before his death. Who stopped them? Thiede. Who brings Vaysh back to life? Thiede. Who makes Vaysh barren? Thiede. Who makes Vaysh take care of the person who survived Thiede's arunistic onslaught? Oh, Thiede. :P
