But it's in the first part of the trilogy, though you have to be Vaysh- or Ashmael-centric to pick up on the profundity of it on a first reading:
"What did Ashmael say when he saw you?" I asked. Vaysh's glassy eyes did not flicker. "Say? What do you think? A long time ago, I died in his arms."
And shortly thereafter, when Pell is badgering Ashmael, there's this, which, truthfully, is where most of my story germinated since it's from Ash's POV. This was also where I knew I had to figure out a particular way for Vaysh to die that was canonically accurate without being a total parallel to Pell (because I didn't want it too, lol):
"Ashmael, you said it's been years since how do you feel about Vaysh now?" He shrugged. "Feel? I can still smell his blood, even now. He was so beautiful, so alive. Losing him was like losing life. Everyone worshiped him " I had gone cold, though the night was warm. "But now, how do you feel now?" I insisted. "Now?" Ashmael wrinkled his brow. "Now something lives in a body that looks like Vaysh, but is it him? I watched him die and spent a year demented with grief. Now? What can I feel? Vaysh is dead."
