I'm a bit late this year and realize this is mostly for my own record-keeping, but for those who might be curious or are here to read in particular fandoms, here is my 2009 summary of fics by fandom. Links are also included; most of them are to posts at my LJ, but there are a few that go elsewhere where you can leave a comment should you be so inclined. ;) The one totally new element was writing in another author's original fiction fandom, The Slave Breakers by [livejournal.com profile] maculategiraffe. I ended up being quite captivated as you'll see from the no fewer than the eight stories and some drabbles I wrote in that fandom alone. I also wrote a few Tolkien slash stories (I've written nearly all genfics in my Tolkien writing prior to this year), but for the most part they didn't prove to be all that popular.

In addition to the stories listed below, the major story that I worked on, but which is still with Storm Constantine, is my Wraeththu novella "Maelstrom and Mage". I did a major revision on it in 2009, then received Storm's many helpful suggestions and comments and rewrote 7/10 of it. She's had it since the end of October but in publishing, nothing happens quickly. So one story which occupied much of my creative energies is not public yet. Hopefully it will be published by her company, Immanion Press, in this coming year. That's really my one major aspiration for 2010: to see that novella in print.

By fandom, in chronological order within each fandom, here's what I wrote in 2009 )

So there they all are! Not including M+M, I wrote and published around 145K words this past year. If I include the M+M rewrite and revision it's closer to 200K, which has been my norm over the past few years. That said, I will be stepping away from fanfiction, at least that's what I say now. There are some personal things I'll be working on, but doubtless I'll continue to write and post in at least a couple of fandoms from time to time.

To my readers, thank you for your comments and encouragement over the past year.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Ashmael by me)
Hello all! For any following this saga from the initial submission, to the overhaul, to the major revision, and at last the 7/10 rewrite, I sent a quick email to Storm just to see if there was still a timeline for this. And there is. But… it'll be a while. Here are her comments, FYI:

I think realistically it will be the new year when I get back to M&M. I've got a couple of books supposed to be out this month and I'm also trying to finish stories for the Wraeththu Mythos collection. I think it will be late spring/early summer for that release.

If I get time to start looking at M&M before Jan, I will do.

So! She's busy. Not surprising. Guess I'll really put that story off in the back recesses of my mind until I hear from her. It helps since I'm going to focus on things other than writing, though I do have a couple of longer fics in mind that I'd like to work on, unhurriedly, and with no deadline. One will be Wraeththu, and the other will be Tolkien. Not sure whether to revive a Numenorean fic begun several years ago, or whether to go the Dwarvish route. Too bad there weren't any Dwarves in Numenor, I could do both at once! ;)
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Ashmael by me)
Without even as much fanfare as I emailed the M+M revision, I've just emailed the rewrite to Storm. I had three trusty friends read it, and two of them provided both overwhelming positive responses and a couple of suggestions. The third reader is an absolute love who is a great cheerleader, and those are marvelous to have as well. I had a long conversation with my aunt yesterday morning and as part of that realized that before meddling with it any more, I should go ahead and let the editor read it and get her feedback. I alerted her to the two elements mentioned by my betas, and figured I'd let her do what an editor does, and go from there. Still... yay! :)

In writerly news, I'll hopefully have a new Slave Breakers story by the weekend, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] brumeux77's prompt, I've been doing research on Glastonbury but need to quit that and simply write the Neville/Percy. It's just that research can be so much fun!

I've also done the gauge swatch on my new sweater project. I'll need to take it to a local yarn store to get the contrast color in person, but that's fine- I know in the long run I'll be much happier. The green heather that I did get is a lovely color, so I think I'll make myself a hat! Or maybe I can find a cool vest pattern and use both skeins. Hmmmmmmm…
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (love knits)
Since I had an entire ball of that yummy green heathered wool yarn from the baby sweater, I decided to knit myself a scarf. Seventeen years I've been knitting, and this is my first-ever scarf. Yes, I do tend to start off with fairly difficult things when trying something new, why do you ask?

Thev self-portrait with newly-blocked 'falling leaves' scarf )

I'm making another couple of pair of fingerless gloves as gifts for friends, though I must admit that the colorway isn't what I thought. It makes me think of fruit loops. :P

Going to eat and shower and take my notebook and knitting and water and leave the house and go away. Library, coffee shop, park, I don't know. But after a morning spent on the phone and then doing some cleaning, it's already been productive but not on M+M.

Hope everyone's having a lovely weekend!
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Portland OR)
She'd started making a random noise in low gears as of Wednesday afternoon, and I was freaking out. I was trying to be analytical about it, noting when it happened, if I was in gear, which gear, etc. This morning I went to the repair shop that's literally two blocks down the road and recommended by my housemate.

Consultation cost: $0
My relief that it's okay, for now, but I will need a new clutch in the future (I knew this; it's the original clutch and she now has over 114,000 miles on her): Priceless

On the way to work today I'll be getting a pair of size 10 circulars so I can continue on with another baby sweater project, this one a retro cabled pullover. Hopefully it will be a good sales day as it's the end of our two week pay cycle, but even if not, my relief over the car is enough to get me through. And it's a weekend! And I'll begin house and cat sitting for my friends down the road, so even if I'm not there all the time, I have my own house to retreat to for 10 days, a quiet house with a lovely gazebo out back for writing, because the rewrite for Maelstrom and Mage has begun. And I'm pleased. Oh, and it's a gorgeously chill, overcast day. :D

EDIT: Squeeee! Joy of joys, I just got a call from [livejournal.com profile] elfscribe5, who's had a summer gig out in the desert and been nearly 100% offline and impossible to reach. I'm so glad her time there is nearly over and she'll be back to civilization soon.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Love me do for snottygrrl)
I really don't mind these kinds of insights, but I really *do* mind when they occur at 2:30 a.m. when I'm unable to sleep. )

Now to finish my coffee. Boy do I wish I'd had more sleep. On the plus side, after my morning shift, our patron services team is being taken to lunch (or breakfast! It's served for most of the day!) at a Portland mainstay named Besaws. Thankfully we were given the menu a couple of days ago as I would be overwhelmed by having to choose a menu item on the spot. I'm still a little undecided.

And at each point, even when tossing and turning at crazy-thirty this morning, when I've been feeling cranky or whiney, I think about [livejournal.com profile] simons_flower and the fact that I should consider it my privilege to be alive to do these things. I hope that this lack of complacency about each day that I do wake up stays with me for a long time.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Ashmael by me)
Not quite as dramatic as mailing an actual tome, but thanks to [livejournal.com profile] heartofoshun's very thorough copy edit and commentary, I've incorporated her suggestions and notes, and emailed Maelstrom and Mage to Storm.

I'm now going to treat myself to lunch at McDonald's before going into work. A Filet o Fish and french fries. LOL.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Love me do for snottygrrl)
So in my current active writing notebook, starting at the front is my [livejournal.com profile] weasley_fest fic. I don't want it to be long, I really don't. But I think if the two characters in question simply get together, it's not as interesting as it could be. So still a ways to go with it. Starting at the back of the notebook was my most recent Slave Breakers story, and then the genfic Gimli story. I've decided that the Beornings must have taken a toll in silver or some other useful metal. I had to rewrite a whole section when I realized the Carrock wasn't directly above the Ford of Carrock, as in, not leading directly to it. While initially jazzed with this story, now I'm wondering why I picked this particular moment of Gimli and Glóin's journey to Rivendell. Am leaving it alone for inspiration to come along. In the middle of the notebook I've started another Slave Breakers story; that's the one that I've been envisioning in my mind's eye for a few days and is quite contentedly and at great speed writing itself. PWP with characterization exploration in that realm is just so much fun. Plus the visual in my mind's eye of Andrei/Lee/Bran was simply too exquisite not to write. Hee.

There were the M+M edits yesterday, thanks to Oshun's and my talk on Friday. And I'm about to go through withdrawal as I'm down to the final of the three Lord John novellas, the last book on tape to do with him that my library has. In looking at Ms. Gabaldon's Lord John series, I'm thrilled to see there's another one forthcoming; damn, is she prolific. I would jump at writing Lord John fanfic, but they're nearly all mysteries of sorts and/or to do with military life and that's not my strong suit. Not only that, but for it to be canonical, it would take quite a while for him to get together with anyone, England in the mid-1700s not exactly being queer friendly. The everyday vocabulary of a lord in that time period, especially to do with clothes, transportation and genteel conversation would also be a bit of a trial, at least at first. I've noticed some of it slipping into my current fics, but not specific words like swive, weskit or sodomitical society. :P

Mulling around in my head is what to write for Ardor in August. I checked out both Morgoth's Ring and The Children of Húrin to glean further first age knowledge. The concept and characters are coming to me for this particular story, but I haven't started writing. I'd really like to at least finish this Slave Breakers threesome (which is, surprisingly, turning into an illuminating look into Bran's thoughts on life post-freedom) and the Gimlific so I can focus on weasley_fest. Oh, and incorporate Oshun's edits. She's going to break me of my encourage me to use semicolons with less frequency. I knew I lean on them a lot. Soon I'll know just how much!

Hope you all have had a pleasing weekend!
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (squee!)
I just got off the phone with [livejournal.com profile] heartofoshun!! There's almost nothing more wonderful than getting to talk writing and fic with someone you so admire and are grateful to. She willingly stepped in to beta M+M as [livejournal.com profile] elfscribe5 went off to the mesas for the summer, and during our phone conversation she brought up some general ideas that won't take whole new sections to convey but will make it even more taut, add more tension and make it even more compelling.

Thank you for the call!!! :D You've really made my day and week, especially with the negative ambiance swirling around where I live. I'll look forward to incorporating those new elements in the coming weeks.

edit: I neglected to mention that I also got to talk with [livejournal.com profile] koshweasley this morning. What a fabulous day! The only negative has been another round of raised voices this morning, but I think I posted about that. I only wish I didn't have to work. Oh well. I'm too excited about potential writing to actually concentrate and do it, I'm afraid. Later. And Monday I have off because I'm getting to have dinner with [livejournal.com profile] cim_halfling, OMG. So I can have a lesiurely day of writing then! :)
thrihyrne: (hand written letter writer)
I have a dentist's appointment at 8:30 this morning. :sigh: My second ever beginnings of a cavity, so I'm going to get it sealed off. Not a morning person, but on the other hand, I did go to bed at a decent hour. And I might get some things done before work.

When [livejournal.com profile] vulgarweed indicated she was participating in the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest and chose Ents as her creature within Tolkien fandom, I was already intrigued. She put a shout out for a quick beta last week and I hastily (therefore oh-so-not-Entishly) volunteered. I've not read anything from an Ent's POV, and she does this with some beautiful imagery and it really sounds like an Ent. So hie thee here for "Lomendánar (Little Love for the Things of My Love)". Here's just two sentences that have haunted me for Tolkienesque loveliness and angst:
I know tales of the Sundering Seas, lady, and the ships that cross to never return to Middle-earth. But we are Middle-earth, and what ship can bear our kind? Even the Elves make ships of our broken bodies.

the quotidian )

Now I must get dressed and on the road for my appointment. This will be a looooooooong day. My supervisor returns from his 2 1/2 week trip to Argentina; in many ways I'm glad he'll be back, but I quite enjoyed having some actual responsibility. I'm glad I've been able to prove myself, and it'll be hard to be 'demoted' back to what I did before. Still, hopefully I was able to lay some groundwork should there be some changes in staff in the upcoming months.

More soon!
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Beta by me)
Work is quite busy- I'm really enjoying doing what my supervisor does since he's overseas until the middle of next week. It feels great to have some responsibility again, and I even had one of the people in the development department call me to thank me for getting everything done promptly and correctly. The first time! Sales are a bit more challenging, as you might expect, but I ended my shift tonight with a very enthusiastic and happy person in Boise, Idaho, who was thrilled that I'd called her and could get her lined up with seats for two of our modern operas for next year. Yay.

In having a long and much appreciated conversation with [livejournal.com profile] evannichols, I realized that not this weekend, but the following two are going to be really busy for me as well. The weekend of mother's day we open Rigoletto, and I'll be leaving early Saturday morning to drive up to Seattle/Bellevue for my grandmother's 90th birthday fête and not returning until Sunday evening. The next weekend is also Rigoletto, and I'll be working the Thursday and Saturday night performances. Still, busy and to do with work is definitely a plus. It's also rather a positive mind-blowing thing to realize that [livejournal.com profile] snottygrrl will soon be living here.

I emailed Storm to let her know my status on M+M; I really have got to stay cracking on it. I have no idea how many other projects she has going or how many times it will go back and forth. This is all new!! And because I was so delighted that my Aragorn/Halbarad story made it through the HASA reviewing pool, I signed up for the next in the Slashy Santa group, this one Ardor in August. But I really do want to treat myself to some Gimli-centric shorter gen fics this summer.

My exercise ball is pretty great in regards to my back and my sitting aches. My upper back is sore, though. Seeing as how the massages at the East West College are only $25, though, I think I'll go every 3 weeks or so until I get some progress made on the knots. The students need the practice and I need my bad to be worked on some more! ;)

Back to your regularly scheduled mid-weeks...
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (slave to the muse)
It's nearly the conclusion of 2008, and while I do have a couple of stories which haven't yet had the author reveals, I'm going to go ahead and do a summary of the year. It's been another productive one, in which I dove head-first with great gusto into a new fandom, which really surprised me. I thought my head would be full with Harry Potter and Tolkien and I'd never get involved in any others. Instead, Storm Constantine's Wraeththu series of books totally took over, but I also wrote a few short selections in Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint world as well. I'd love to write some Mary Renault The Persian Boy fanfiction one day, but it hasn't yet happened. ;)

I'm going to organize these by fandoms rather than by date, but here's what I've written and posted in 2008 (not including 2 fest stories not yet revealed):

Wraeththu
All of my Wraeththu fics can be found here at my website. You can't leave reviews, but for the first fic below, I do have it saved as a pdf there, and there are pictures of 'Castlegar' as well as some other yummy pictures.
§ Maelstrom and Mage, Desire Thine Darkling
49,083 words; Ashmael/Vaysh and OCs, adult
Available here at Forever Wraeththu [where you can leave a review! ;) ] or here as a pdf file to download.

§ Down the Whispering Well
44,523 words; Vaysh/Ashmael and OCs, adult
Available here at Forever Wraeththu. I didn't get around to making a pdf of this one, though maybe I will soon.

§ Passion's Acolyte
3,015 words; Cal/Swift, adult
Available here on LJ or here at Forever Wraeththu

§ Interpret Me the Savage Whirr
6,198 words; Seel/Ashmael, adult
Available here on LJ or here at Forever Wraeththu

§ Quare Clausum Fregit (Wherefore he broke the close)
3,364 words; Vaysh/OC [Yazdyar, from 'Down the Whispering Well'], adult
Available here on LJ and here at Forever Wraeththu

§ Mere Trifles
1,723 words; Seel/Swift (not adult), Cobweb
Available here at Forever Wraeththu or here at my website. I don't seem to have ever posted it at my LJ!

§ Swooping to Landward
13,800 words; Chithra/Lemuel (OCs), a study of Fioan/Colurastes cultural interaction, adult
Available here on LJ (link is to part one) or here at Forever Wraeththu

§ After the Storm, Restless Fire
4,979 words; Ithiel/Cobweb and Ithiel/Terzian, adult
Available here on LJ or here at Forever Wraeththu

§ Reap the Wild Wind
24,402 words; Kelp/Blackspur, Kelp/Hunt (OCs), adult
Link to the first post on my LJ here, or you can read the whole thing here at my website. It hasn't yet been uploaded to Forever Wraeththu.

§ Libertine
389 words; Terzian, PG-13
Available here at my LJ

A few Wraeththu drabbles written along the way are here at my website

Harry Potter
§ Cloudscape of Ravens
18,030 words; Ron/OC, Ron/Severus, adult
Written for the [livejournal.com profile] ginger_lust Ron-centric fest I hosted with a lot of help. The link there is locked to ensure no-one underage in the community got to it, but you can read it here at my website or here at Skyehawke if you'd care to leave a review.

§ No Shame, This Life, Beloved
14,792 words; Ron/Draco, adult; in all likelihood, the last story in the "Magic Immunity" story arc.
Available here at my LJ

§ A Rally Toward Exalted Moments
5,567 words; Harry/Charlie, adult
Available here at my LJ or here at the [livejournal.com profile] weasley_fest community

§ Scotch Game
9,144 words; Ron/Remus, adult
Available here at my LJ; it's locked at the [livejournal.com profile] remus_ron_slash community to prevent underage folks from reading it there.

§ The Sensibility of Wantonness
3,181 words; Ron/Draco ["Crown of Rope" universe], adult
Available here at my LJ

I also seem to have written a slew of various drabbles by request on a few different days. Rather than organize them, there are a bunch of requested HP drabbles here (some Wraeththu, too, but I put them on my website), a rare het Ron/Hermione drabble here and Ron/Charlie drabble from the vampire!Charlie incest story I wrote a year or so ago for [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins

I also have one lingering WIP, a Dean/Ron for the very patient Callum James. I actually printed out what I had when I was at his flat in England in October, and I really will finish it. It's just taken a back burner, to my chagrin.

Swordspoint
These are nearly all drabbles, though I think I did write a vignette. LOL. I've written a lot this year and can't keep it all straight! Hence the annual wrap-up.

Basil's Banquet, Fall of the Kings drabble
Untitled Richard/Alec drabble
Revenge Effloresces, Richard/Alec drabble

Hmmmm. Thought I'd written more Swordspoint than that; I think I just wish I had!

Lord of the Rings
Unbelievably after my start in the Ardaverse, the only things I've written in LotR fandom this year have been drabbles, but I do seem to have written a few. All are general rating unless otherwise noted.

Untitled Halbarad-centric drabble
Alliances, Gimli-centric
Untitled Gimli-centric drabble
Untitled Éowyn-centric drabble
Untitled Celeborn/Aragorn drabble, adult
Another untitled Gimli-centric drabble

Wow. So, looking at the non-drabbles, it appears as though I've written around 200,000 words of fanfiction this year. I'm not a real word-counter usually; it's just good for me to look at the year and see where my focuses have been. Obviously it's been with Wraeththu more than anything else, and I don't know what my focus will be next year. I will be expanding "Maelstrom and Mage," trying to double it in length to get it ready to be a proper novel available from Immanion Press, and my slashy_santa fic is Tolkien. This year I also started out trying NaNoWriMo, so I wrote about 3K of actual original fiction. Wheeeeeee.

For those of you who have read and enjoyed my stories and let me know, thank you so much! Feedback, commentary, and enthusiasm are always gratifying for an author.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Default)
I bring music! For those who read along with my Wraeththu gap filler novella, I have a soundtrack of sorts to go with it. Some songs correspond with the characters' development and actions, as well as a couple just as 'soundtrack music' for the scenes as I envisioned them in my head, and also music I listened to while writing it over the past couple of months. As a part of this I'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] sexyscholar, [livejournal.com profile] llembas, [livejournal.com profile] eccequambonum and [livejournal.com profile] wolfiekins for plying me with music that otherwise I'd have been shamefully unaware of.

This is when I wish I were writing an AU fic. This is the final post; you knew it was coming, and here's my take on how this pivotal event may have occurred. I just keep reminding myself that this is all Storm's plot, her 'cruelty', but living it through Ashmael is quite painful indeed. Continued from post 9,

For those who have been reading this, thank you for your companionship in my first foray into Wraeththu fanfiction. A sequel will be starting up soon from Vaysh's POV. I've also put together a 'soundtrack' for Maelstrom and Mage which I should have uploaded for your listening pleasure later this weekend.

Maelstrom and Mage, post 9 )
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Ashmael chibi by kaenguma)
My dreams had been a bit subdued of late, but not last night. Some of it is fuzzy now, but in my dream I'd listened to an entire book on tape and then, later on in the dream, had gone to a person's house where they were washing cars and got my car washed (though it was my first car, a red 1989 Audi 80 named Ouvrielle) and told the guy there about the person in the book on tape! Because the person in the book had gone to college nearby and the college had closed down in 1974 but this guy (with the car wash) had attended before it closed... :shakes head: My subconscious really is jam-packed.

I'll keep this somewhat to a minimum since most of you haven't read the Wraeththu series that I'm going to crazy with in this multi-novella gapfiller I'm writing, but I may write about some possible character motivation questions that could be seen as general. However, I've been writing this story and set the characters in their shadowy past at my alma mater, though it's off in a somewhat post-apocalyptic future, and it's from Ashmael's POV. I was looking at the second trilogy of books last night for descriptions of this City on a Hill, Immanion, back when it was still under construction, because I'm writing about Ashmael's first visit there. According to canon, he was pretty much there from the not quite get-go. But in my personal exploration of him as a character back in his first few years as a har (versus being human), I have him building a community from two small groups up on the Mountain at Sewanee. This is what I've been writing for weeks now, but I'm so excited because as I was leafing through the first book of trilogy #2, I see that another character describes Ashmael (and two others) like this: It was obvious to Seel that these were hara of high caliber, who had perhaps attempted projects similar to his own at Saltrock. (emphasis mine) So even though when I was first inhaling these books and had no eye to Ashmael at all, somehow I managed to do exactly what the author had envisioned! I'm just so excited about that.

Back to your regularly scheduled Thursdays. I'll probably be musing more on this this weekend as I'm really at a loss as to character motivations and may want to write out my thoughts even if no-one can really say anything about it in reply.
thrihyrne: Portland, OR (Parallax by me)
It's Natalia in Castlegar with a threesome blood-binding. You know who couldn't resist such a spectacle, much less a good party! This is a shorter post, a one scene vignette to get Thiede and Arahal back in the picture as my gap-filler weaves ever closer to original canon. And I couldn't resist making an icon for Parallax. It's a hazard with original characters, falling for them… Continued from post 7, here.

I suspect that any of you reading this who have come here from Wraeththu fandom don't know my HP writing, but I am mostly known as a slash writer there. Within the canon Wraeththu series, aruna tends to be described primarily in euphemistic terms, but with my background, I wanted more detail. My smut muse really wanted a chance to have fun with these two, so I'll admit there's not loads of plot in this post. Thiede and Arahal show up again after this, never fear. They're talked about a lot instead! Continued from post 6, here.

Rating: this post definitely adult
Warnings: slash, WIP, introspective Ashmael
Word Count: 5,677
Disclaimer: Ashmael, Vaysh, and the harish world all belong to Storm Constantine; I'm merely playing with great abandon in her sandbox.
Pairings: Vaysh/Ashmael

Summary: Genesis. Paradise. Illumination. Exodous. Before they went to Immanion, before Thiede manipulated their destiny, before death and despair, Ashmael and Vaysh knew and loved each other. This is one way their story may have been told.
